I have been researching Allen/Allan family of (primarily) Aucloggeen and Cloonboo.  I have found a few records for family members associated with Aucloggeen that sometimes list the residence as "Belford" I have found one or two other references to this placename but very little else.  I have not found it on general lists of townland names for Galway, or any references in Griffith's Valuation.  Is this a sub-area of Aucloggeen?  Something else?  I have attached examples of two records for a single family - one showing a reference to Belford the other to a variant spelling of Aucloggeen.

Any insight would be appreciated.

  • So, mabye I have just answered my own question:  Belford or Bellford seems as though it could be just an anglicization of the Irish placename.  Bell-ford=Ford of the Bell ("little bell").

Still, if anyone can verify that this is a commonly/rarely/formerly used nickname for Aucloggeen - or part of Aucloggeen (that would be interesting...) that would be very useful.

  • Hello Patrick,

I can only confirm that Annaghdown is both a townland and a parish and Aucloggeen is a townland within the parish of Annaghdown. See database here: http://www.seanruad.com/.

I would guess that Belford is just an address withing the townland/parish of Annaghdown.

You are correct in your comment - it is an anglicization of the original place name - I have only seen it used in the parish registers.

So to answer your question, it is a formerly used name for Aucloggeen.

Strangely, Thomas b. 1893 is listed as Anne's grandson in the census, with his parents listed as Michael and Bridget. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Liscananaun/Aucloggeen/1379303/
