Bernard McDonough 1804 - 1842

Born Country Fermanagh

Lived at Killagally in the parish of Meath and was a tenant farmer

When he was 26 he married Mable Morrison

On the 17th Feb 1842 he departed Plymouth with is wife and three children for Sydney Australia. Unfortunately he died during the passage.

His son James McDonough born 4th October 1840 is my ancestor.

I will be in Ireland for the month of August and am trying to trace any evidence of Bernard while I am there.

Kind regards

  • Dear Rob:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out board.  You mentioned both Counties Fermanagh and Meath?  There doesn't appear to be a parish named Killagally in County Meath.  There is one located in County Monaghan (Killygally) and Killagally located in County Offaly.  Would you clarify this please?  You can reply on this thread and I will do my best to assist you.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

    Hi Jane

Thank you for my reply. As my Great- Great Grandfather Bernard McDonough died while travelling to Australia and was buried at sea we have very little information that has been verified on this arm of our family tree.

We thought Killagally was the area, Meath was the Parish. Various family members had mentioned County Fermanagh and Sligo but nothing can be confirmed as no real records were kept and I am the first family member to visi5 since Bernard’s family left for Australia in the 1840’s.

If I can uncover any other information when I return to my home at the 3nd of the week I will send it to you.

    Kind regards

    Hi Jane

I have a PDF document (9 pageson) on Bernard McDonough including the Ship’s passage entry from 1842 but I am unable to copy and attach this document or the details to this message board.

My personal Email is dreamingfields@me.com. If you are able to email me I can forward the document to you in this way otherwise I can’t see how to go further until we arrive in Ireland, unless you have a suggestion.

I appreciate your assistance. We arrive in Dublin 2nd August and will be driving around Northern Ireland for the first week after then.

    Kind regards
