Hi, I'm doing research into blacksmiths of Ireland and would like any information on blacksmiths in and around the  Ennistymon area from 1922 to the present day. Thank you.

  • This website has a list of Irish blacksmiths by name. Most are for the 19th century but there are quite a few for the 20th century. You don’t appear to be able to search by county or other location, so you may have to go through each batch of surnames to see if any are recorded for Ennistymon.

As luck would have it, I have a list of a handful of Ennistymon blacksmiths (19th century born though):

    ENNISTYMON

The OS map at the turn of the 20th century records at least 5 'smithy' forges in Enistymon.  (see map below)

Pat Blake (b. 1883) of Monastery Lane, Ennistymon

    BOGBERRE STREET, ENNISTYMON

Michael Gorman (b.1881) of Bagberry Street, Ennistymon

Charles O'Reilly (b.1863) of Bagberry Street, Ennistymon

John Moloney (b.1890)  had a forge in Ennistymon, still active in the 1980s.

    ENNIS ROAD, ENNISTYMON

James Healy (b.1854) of Old Town Street, Ennistymon (see Healy's bar, there were a couple of forges along that stretch)

Jack Leyden (b.1872) Old Town Street (aka the Ennis Road) Ennistymon, who was descended from James Morgan (1814 – 1.2.1874) Blacksmith,  had a forge on the Ennis Road in Ennistymon. His family continued trading in Ennistymon (until when I don't know). The Morgan blacksmilths in Willbrook (near Corofin) continued in the trade until very recently, and may know more about the history there as they were originally smithing in Ennistymon in the 1850s.

    LAHINCH

Frank Morgan (1771-1880) of Lahinch was a blacksmith. He died age 109 (a widower) Michael Morgan, son, present at death. (See also John Morgan of Lahinch, smith, listed in Slater's Directory in 1880).

    KILFENORA
John Morgan (1889 – 9.3.1953) Blacksmith. Died age 64. Kilfenora. Patrick Morgan son present.

You might also find a list of additional apprentice names in the 1911 Census

    Hope this helps!
