I am trying to find out about the Bredin family from Skeagh, Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland. My great grandfather Richard Bredin was born in Fermanagh to the best of my knowledge on the 24 th January 1841. His parents were James Bredin and Isabella Acheson. Richard Bredin my great grandfather was married to Eliza Dalton and her parents were Thomas Dalton and Mary Liddie also from Fermanagh. Richard and Eliza migrated to Australia but not sure of the date.James parents were Sam and Nelly Breadon (Bredin). There is a photo of the Bredin family home in Northern Ireland but nothing else. I know that James and Isabella are buried in the Argavea cemetery. Hope someone can fill on the blanks.

  • I see a James Bredin farming in Skeagh in the 1901 census. He was born c 1840, so of an age to be your Richard’s brother:

The family was Church of Ireland. I have looked for their marriage but can’t locate it. James died on 20.7.1908.

    1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Fermanagh/Greenhill/Sk…

Probate abstract: Bredin Lucinda of Maguiresbridge county Fermanagh widow died 17 October 1928 Probate Londonderry 7 January to reverend Edward J. McKew clerk and Andrew Moffitt farmer. Effects £14 18s.

I searched for the marriage of Richard Bredin to Eliza Dalton but can’t find it in the civil records. Could they have married outside Ireland?

I see a death for John Breadon at Skeagh on 26.3.1878 aged 36. He was a bachelor and the son of a farmer. Informant was James Beadon of Skeagh.

Couple of possible deaths registered in Lisnaskea for James Bredin senior. 1868 aged 96 and another 1867 aged 72.  The latter seems more likely of the two. That certificate isn’t available to view free on-line yet. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists 3 Breadon properties in Skeagh. Samuel senior had plot 13a which was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 27 acres. Samuel junior had plot 14 which was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 29 acres. James had plot 15 which was 14 acres of land only. No house, so he evidently lived with one of the Samuels.

You can use the Valuation Revision records to see what happened after 1862. Changes of tenants etc are recorded right up to 1929. (Though it’s evident from the census there was only the 1 Bredin property there by 1901).

One of the Samuels died on 13.6.1890 aged 90. He was a widower. His son James was the informant:

The family church was probably Aghavea. It’s baptism, marriage and burial records start in 1815.  They have been transcribed on this site:

    http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/fermanagh/church.htm

I see a Samuel Breadon listed who was married to a Jane. They had a son James baptised 4.3.1840 in Skeagh. Your Richard is also listed. I expect you should be able to locate siblings.

The tithe applotment records for Aghavea in 1832 list 3 Breadon farms in the townland. They were held by James, William & Samuel respectively.

  • Elwyn, Thanks so much for all the information you have found I really appreciate it. Richard and Eliza married after they came out to Australia. I have their marriage certificate. The name Richard has been handed down through our family starting with my great grandfather then his son my grandfather Richard Schomberg then my father Richard Walter then my brother Richard Sydney . I have the information on them here in Australia very little about them in Ireland. Here’s hoping I can finally put some pieces of the puzzle together.Once again thank you so much.

    Margaret.
