Brennan was/is a common surname in Sligo and in Achonry civil parish in particular. The 1901 census had 269 Brennan families in Sligo. Since your family goes way back, my only suggestion is to consider autosomal DNA testing. You may get matches with Brennan connections in Sligo.

Hi-I also have a similar family history with Brennan and have come across the name Dominic Brennan in a generation Of my family tree. As it is such an unusual name, perhaps we share some of the same ancestors. I would like to compare notes [and family trees if possible] but I am not sure how to do this in Ireland xo. You can compare notes here but not exchange trees. Usually what happens is that the person(s) with the tree, advises the other party how to access the tree. In mmy own case, I have a tree on Ancestry and if I know the other parties e-mail address, I send them an e-mail or let them know the name of the tree on Ancestry.

I recently found DNA matches to other Ancestry.com members, who had the surname Brennan in common. I cannot tie our trees together as the connection is distant cousins, 5th-8th degree, so our 3x Great Grandparents were possibly siblings. The other connection was Achonry. They had ancestors from Collooney, Aclare and Tobercurry respectively. My family has no information as to where our Brennans originated in Ireland, or when they arrived in New York, other than approximately 1850 or so. My grandfather was an only child and his father passed away when he was an infant, so I've been trying to reconstruct this for some time. This thread popped out at me, b/c my grandfather's cousin was a Dominic Brennan, the only one I know of, and I've always thought that it was an odd combination of names.

I am looking for James Brennan and Eliza Mann (sp? - Mahon, Maughan?) and their children, Michael, James, William, Eliza and Mary. All resided in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA for the rest of their lives, after arriving in the U.S. Based on marriage records, etc. I believe they and their parents were Irish speakers. I am curious if they were originally from Tubbercurry or the vicinity.

Hi- this post is directed to previous posters “Mike Brennan NJ” and “Patience.’  All three of us have 1800s era Brennan ancestors from Achonry Parish in County Mayo with a possible Dominic Brennan in the family line. The unusual name combona  struck me as well. It would be great if we could compare trees. Hi Hosty, sending direct messages you both. Just to clarify, the only Dominic Brennan I have in my tree is my grandfather's cousin and he was born in the U.S. However, the name combination does not occur in any other part of my tree and is very unique among the James, Michael, John, etc.

Depending on WHERE in Sligo your Brennans lived....some Brennans who lived around Tubbercurry and Curry village married into my Cooke line. Some of them emigrated.
