I'm looking for any information on my ancestors, Malachy Brennan and Catherine Costello. Married Feb 1855 in Elphin Diocese. The marriage location is Glinsk, Galway and Roscommon, IrelandAccording to the records the parish variants are Creggs, Dunamon, Glinsk and Kilbegnet, Kilbegnet, Kilbegnet and Ballinakill, Kilbegnet and Glinsk, Killbegnet, Killbegnet and Dunamon. Am I searching in the correct forum? I plan on heading over in May to search records. Any suggestions on where to head?

Thanks,

Dan

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

All messages end up on our main message board. Technically, you are not in the correct parish page since this is the Elphin civil parish page. I would also sign up for the Athleague Galway parish page.

It appears that your ancestors lived on the Galway/Roscommon border. The marriage would have occurred possibly on the Galway side in the bride's parish. I located three possible baptismal records on Roots Ireland which are shown below. Unfortunately all were before 1864 when civil registration started. The records were recorded in the Athleague RC parish in Roscommon which also covers part of Co. Galway and I'm assuming that was Malachy's area. No townland is shown in these records. Were there other children born in Ireland. Did Malachy and Catherine emigrate?

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and found a Malachy Brennan in the townland of Coolaspaddaun in Athleague civil parish in Co. Galway.

    Likely this is your ancestor.

For background, there is a small Athleague civil parish in Galway which borders a much larger Athleague civil parish in Co. Roscommon.

I will alert our HQ about your trip.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the response. I don't think that is the same Malachy I'm looking for. I have a USA death certificate of my 2nd great-grandfather (Michael J Brennan) which states he was born in Ireland in either 1859 or 1863 (different ages listed on USA census and death cert, though definitely the same person as confirmed by a family member) and that his parents were Malachy Brennan and Catherine Costello. I searched for Irish marriage certs and found Malachy and Catherine married in the above named Catholic Parish. I traced Malachy to Boyle, born around 1838. Though that may not be the same Malachy either.

What about Creggs Parish? This is what I read about that parish: "Creggs Parish is the combination of two of the historical parishes of Elphin Diocese, Glinsk and Kilbegnet. Eighty percent of the parish is in County Galway with the remainder in County Roscommon."

This link will take you to the parish register for Glinsk/Creggs on the National Library site https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0553  Glinsk records start around 1836. Note the map on the upper right corner and you will see that Glinsk/Creggs RC parish borders Athleague RC parish to the northwest. Glinsk/Creggs is mostly Galway while Athleague is mostly Roscommon.

Marriages normally occurred in the bride's parish which in this case was Glinsk. Possibly, Malachy and Catherine moved to the south where Malachy was living before marriage and were now in Athleague RC and civil parish. Then the question is where is the baptismal record for Michael? I have not found one. You may want to take some time and scroll thru the parish registers for both parishes and see if you find the Michael record.   The Glinsk/Creggs link is above and here is the Athleague register.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0537

Did Malachy and Catherine stay in Ireland?

I see ur are planning to visit  Ireland in May,  it seems to suggest from  ur correspondence that ur family originated from  the Athleague and Kilbegnet  parishes, both of whom are bordering each other, I live in this area and yes there were Brennan's , costellos , mcdermotts and Keogh living there. Today there are many  Brennan  and Costello families continue to reside  in those parts, the keoghs and mcdermotts  are no longer .

I am the chair man of the local heritage group, and will do what ever I can to  help u find ur connections .... Can u send to my email- timduke50@gmail.com all the info u have at ur disposal  regarding ur family.......every snippet matters and may be relevant

                     Timothy .

  • Hi Timothy,

I sent an email to your gmail account but it bounced back. I am staying in Athleague next Wed/Thu evenings. I hope we can
meet and spend some time. I would like to view church and any civil records regarding my ancestors from the area and meet with any local
    historians.
