Hi—I will be in Ireland in May and was hoping to perhaps find a bit more information about my ancestor Bridget Butler who married Henry Taylor in 1848 in Parsonstown. The gave their address as John’s Place. Henry Taylor was a member of the British Military. ( 1st Royal ) They were both Roman Catholic. Their daughter Rebecca was born 22 Aug 1850 in St. St. John’s,Limerick, daughter Susan was born Sept 16 1856 in Birr, Offaly. They later moved to Sheffield, England in 1857 or 1858. I have hit a wall with any information regarding Bridget Butler. I can’t find a birth date or anything. They had another daughter Mary Jane born No 30, 1852, Cork, Ireland but I can’t find any information on her either. Any suggestion would be welcome. Thanks!

  • Hi Lazuli,
John's Place is just off Emmet Square in Birr (Parsonstown)  the road is the N52  (N= National Road)

    I saw the marriage 22nd August 1848

These are the Butler names in the Tithe records, so one must be Bridget's father.

For quick searching Ancestry has most records now, I am not a member anymore, you could join for a month.
Do you have Henry's  Army papers?
He may have been at Crinkill. which is just south of Birr.

1864 Civil records were introduced in Ireland, so we rely on Church records, Tithe records, Griffiths Valuation records and the Cenus records.

One Bridget Butler that keeps poping up is a Bridget Butler in Clonebrone, outskirts of Birr.

I just saw a John Taylor aged 30in 1821 in Crinkill Barracks he was a Private. about 69th down.

    I hope this has helped,

  • Hi Lazuli

Just to let you know I have made a few enquiries re your query but am awaiting answers.  Records in Birr R.C. Church are only recorded since 1838 so unfortunately we won't be able to find any regarding Bridget's baptism.
