Cahill Brothers - Patrick (b. 1773) m. Catherine Cody and Walter Cahill (b.1884) and Anastasia Cody (b. 1795)

Hello,

I am in search of information regarding my ancestors Patrick and Walter Cahill, whose mother Honora Mary O'Meara I believe came from Bannow.  Honora Mary married Thomas Cahill who I believed came from Parish Moyne in Co. Tipperary.

I understand Patrick Cahill was part of the 1798 rebellion and left Ireland soon thereafter for Canada.

Patrick and Walter married sisters Catherine and Anastasia Cody who I understand hailed from Enniscorthy.     Patrick and Walter also had a brother John who I understand was baptised in Moyne.

I will be coming to Ireland in October and will be visiting the area. Any information on the family would be most appreciated.

All the best,

Mary Banman

  • Dear Mary

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching out message board and welcome to the site.  The parish registers for Moyne are available online through the National library of Ireland and they are free.  The baptisms and marriages both start in 1804, which is quite early for Irish records and they are definitely worth a look.  the link is here:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0276    You might also look at the Wexford County Archives website.  The link is here:  http://wexfordcountyarchive.com/family-history/

In the meantime,  I will pass this query to a volunteer who may be able to add further information.  Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Dear Mary:

I have heard back from the volunteer who has asked that I give you the following information:

There are a number of Moyne  villages in County Tipperary and also elsewhere. In the main Moyne Templetouhy parish the records date from 1804  and there are Cahills listed in the births. There are  a reasonable number of Cahills listed in the Tithe Applotment books c.1828 and also Griffiths valuations c.1853 but there is no searchable information sources to enable links to we established with the information provided.. The Tipperary County Library  located in Thurles are very helpful  resource and  might be able to give some direction and would also be a possible point of contact...  There are two individuals who are very helpful within the Tipperary County Library:  Mary Darmody and her assistance, John.  Mary is also involved in the Tipperary Historical Society and she may have further resources or information to share through that group.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.  However, it is definitely a place to visit on your trip.  The website for Tipperary Studies which The Tipperary Historical Society hosts is here:  http://tipperarystudies.ie/historical-society/  Kind regards, Jane
