My great grandmother, Elizabeth Coleman, maiden name O'Neill, first marriage to Jeremiah McCarthy.  Second marriage to John Coleman.  Birth date 1855, Ratass, Tralee, Kerry, Ireland.  Died on 27Nov1933 in Cork, at the Cork District Hospital.

Her husband John Coleman, born 25 MAR1859, born in Cork.  Died 17APR1928 in Cork District Hospital.

Their son, my grandfather, John Joseph Coleman, born in Tralee 07Jan1889.  Baptised in the Catholic Church. Moved to Boston when he was about 4 or 5 years old. He stayed there, and died in 1945.

In which cemetary might John and Elizabeth be buried?

In addition, I would like to find John's family.  He had a brother Michael, and a brother Patrick. I do not know their parents' names or anything else about John's family, but that they were from Cork City.  John went to the US in 1875, returned to Ireland and married Elizabeth in 1887 inTralee, then moved back to Boston around 1893, and finally returned to Tralee some time around 1905.  I found them in the Tralee census in 1911.

The last known address I have for them is 110 High Street, Cork.

Can anyone help?

  • Dear Ann:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out programme!

There are a few options for you to search for the Coleman graves.

Historic Graves is a community based heritage project that has done a lot of graveyard surveys all over Ireland, but particularly in Cork.  They photograph, record and transcribe headstones and their work is excellent.  The link to their site is:

    http://historicgraves.com/

You can search via graveyard, map, or surname.  You can zoom in on headstones in order to have a closer look at the inscriptions.

    FindAGrave is another option.

Their website is below, however their transcriptions and photographs are taken by volunteers and many graveyards are only partially completed.

    https://www.findagrave.com/

Interment.net is another website that may be useful to you.  Again, this is voluntarily done, but the researchers are noted for continuing to return to complete graveyards.

    http://www.interment.net/ireland/cork.htm

I note that there only appears to be one graveyard for County Cork.

The Cork Archives has a website that also have useful information for you  The link is below:

    http://www.corkarchives.ie/collections/overviewandguidetosomemajorcollections/cemeteryrecords/

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The very best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • I sent an email to archivist@corkcity.ie  inquiring about which cemetery my grandparents are in.  I received a reply that they aren't at St. Joseph's, and to send an email to recreation@corkcity.ie  to have them check if they are at St. Finbarr's Cemetery.  I sent an email this afternoon.  I will let you know what happens.  But I'm not sure if anyone out there is reading this........  I hear crickets......

  • Jane:  Thank you for your reply with many links.  I tried them all.  I'm not finding anything.  Maybe John Coleman was buried at a cemetery outside of the city, and then when Elizabeth died, they put her next to him.

Do you  have any suggestions on what I should do next?  I know I need to find John's birth record, but I have been looking for years and haven't found it yet.

    Thank you,

    Ann

  • Dear Ann:

Below find the civil death record that I have found for John Coleman who is listed as being 90 years of age.  Is this your John Coleman?

You mentioned that he was born in Tralee County Kerry in 1855 and I'm going to copy this post to our Tralee volunteer who may be able to assist you with the parish registers.

It is possible that he is buried outside Cork or there is no famiy headstone.  I think that you might try to look for Elizabeth Coleman to see if her death is registered and there is a headstone for her.  You can use the Civil Registers which are located at the link below:

    http://www.irishgenealogy.ie

You might also look through the 1901 and 1911 Census returns to follow their movements.  Did they live in Cork City?  I'm not sure from your post.  The Census returns are located at the link below:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The above website (the National Archives) also has probate information in the form of the Calendar of Wills and you might find some information there.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

    The very best of luck.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Ann,

    Civil Marriage Cert. 1887

     https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1887/10806/5941270.pdf

The Church records match the Civil Record.

John resident in Fenit at the time of the marriage, his father a Steward also named John.

There are a number of Cork records for a John son of John Coleman born c 1859 at rootsireland.

Only one child baptised to this couple in Tralee John in 1889, sponsors Michael Coleman & Ellen McCarthy, could not find a Civil Registration record in Tralee for this John.

There is a Michael Coleman in Kenmare in 1901

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Kenmare/Henry_Street/1410547/ but his father was Patrick not John.

There is a Margaret Coleman and an Agnes Coleman recorded as sponsors to other children in 1878. 1885 & 1895 in Tralee.

I don't think I can do anymore with the information we have at the moment. Could you send us the Census link you have for 1911 Ann that could be very helpful.

I wonder would Slater's (or one of the others) Directory mention either Elizabeth or John Senior but I do not have access to them.

You have clearly done so much research already, I really hope we can help some more.

  • Hello Martine:  Thank you for your reply.  Yes, that marriage record is correct for John and Elizabeth.  I have that, too.  And that one child, John, in 1889 to this couple is my grandfather, an only child, but had 2 half sisters and 1 half brother.I have that birth, baptism record also.  I have included the link for the 1911 Tralee Census below in my note to Jane.

Dear Jane:  The man who is 90 is not my grandfather, nor great grandfather, and I have their death certificate and death record.  They didn't live that long.

Elizabeth O'Neill was born in  Tralee in 1855, not John.  I should have been more clear.  Her birthday was 07Dec1855.  I have the church record.

I have the death register for Elizabeth Coleman, that is where I found her date of death, 27Nov1933, Cork District Hospital.

John and Elizabeth Coleman were in Boston in 1901.

I found John and Elizabeth Coleman in the Tralee Census of 1911.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Tralee_Urban__pa…

I know for sure, 100% that this is correct.  The two little boys with them are their grandsons, who were born in the US.  But where are the parents of these little boys? I can't find them in the U.S.

I do not know what year they moved to Cork, but I do know that they lived at 110 High Street until they went to the hospital and died.

I had a genealogist help me many years ago, and I just located some of the papers she sent me.  She went to the Cork County Library, and found some info in the Guy & Co directories.  It shows that John Coleman was not at 110 High Street in 1920, but he was there in 1923, 1927.  John died in 1928 and Elizabeth died in 1933, and in 1938 J. O'Neill and J. O'Leary are listed.  William O'Neill is there in 1944 and 1945.  Perhaps this O'Neill is one of Elizabeth's relatives.  Her maiden name was O'Neill.  I could not find any brothers of Elizabeth, but about 6 sisters.

The genealogist sent me the electoral register.  Mary Coleman is at 110 High Street from 1942 - 1957.  I have her death register 25Jul1957, 75 years old, a widow at 110 High Street.  I'm not sure who she is.  She could be Elizabeth's daughter, Mary, whose father was Jeremiah McCarthey, but he died when she was very young, and John Coleman raised her as his own, so she took the name Coleman, although she was married at one time and had children.  Or perhaps  she may be the sister in law or niece of John Coleman.  John had two brothers, Mike and Pat Coleman, who lived in Cork, but I don't know where.

Then, in the electoral registers, in 1947 there is a John McCarthy and Beatrice Rooney along with Mary Coleman.  Then in 1958 Beatrice is listed as McCarthy, so she and John got married.  I have not found their marriage record, which might help by indicating their parents.

So far no luck with cemetaries.

Thank you both for all you research and help.  I wonder how I could find out more about the couple, John McCarthy and his wife Beatrice Rooney, who was living at the house in the early 1960s.  I wonder if they had any children.  I looked on the Irish Genealogy website in civil and parish records, but they did not show up.
