Hello
I have researched a record of my grandmother’s baptism on 28th December 1894 in Danesfort and the address is given as Grange
I would like to get a copy of this if possible and also there doesn’t seem to be a birth record of her
Any help and advice gratefully received
Thanks

  • The subscription site Roots Ireland has a transcription record of a birth of a Catherine Slattery on January 25 1895. No father was shown and the mother was Bridget Slattery. They lived in Grange. There was an annotation that a Johanna Burke registered the birth on March 25th.

Parents were required to register a birth within 30 days or they would be fined. To avoid a fine, parents gave a later date as the birth date to avoid the fine. I think that would explain why the baptism was in late December but register as aJanuary date.

Unfortunately when I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie   I could not locate the actual record.

You asked about a copy of the baptismal record. The parish register for 1894 is not online. If you wanted a baptismal certificate, you would need to write to the church.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hello Roger
Thanks for your reply. The parish in Danesfort Co. Kilkenny have have located the baptismal record and are sending it on. It’s under Kate Slattery with a mother of the same name and no father noted. She was definitely born on 24th December 1894 as we have her death certificate. It’s just the birth certificate we are having problems locating. Her marriage certificate names her as Kate and death certificate as Katherine.
I’ve ordered one online and hopefully they may find it now they have more specific places and dates. Thanks for your help

If you get a chance, let me know what the authorities tell you about the birth record.

  • Hello!
I’m wondering if you could help me.

I have a baptismal certificate for my grandmother born on 24/12/1894 and registered on 28th December of that year. We are trying to locate the birth certificate or baptismal certificate of her mother ( also Kate Slattery) we are trying to do a late registration.

  • Is this Chris?

I looked for Catherine Slattery birth record in the Kilkenny registration district. There were three available. 1867 1869 and 1872. I thought maybe the 1872 record made the most sense for someone who had a child in late 1894 and also she was living in Kilkenny town. See sixth record at the link.

    Hi Roger,

Thank you for this, I’m wondering if there’s any Kate? Or Katherine.  As she is registered as that as the mother. Perhaps worth accessing the other 2? We are thinking that Grange/Danesfort was the area she was working and living at the time. There was no father’s name registered and we remember being told she was a single mother. (Until she married a Kelly/Kelley) and moved to Uk around 1898/99 with Kate. We know Kate had a younger half brother William ( Billy) who eventually moved back to Ireland ( he never married) my husband also remembers the name Bridget. The register office aren’t able to generate a birth certificate as yet unless we find Kate the mother. I attach a copy of the baptismal certificate

    Thanks for your advice

  • There is a Catherine Slattery baptized March 29 1869 in Danesfort RC parish. Father James Slattery mother Bridget Drea as transcribed by Roots Ireland but based on another record, the name may be Bridget Shea. This family lived in Grange so this may be the mother of the December 1894 child.

By the way, I did not find any Kate or Katherine records.

  • Also! You mentioned Bridget Drea/Shea in  another record? Is this also worth getting?

    Thanks

  • Chris:

See second record. At first glance, it appears to be Drea but after further examination, I think the name is Shea.
