Hello

My great great grandfather was Christopher Dowling born in 1819. One English census record gives his birth place as County Kildare. I think Christopher was baptised on 31st December 1819 in Wicklow and Carlow, Rathvilly, Ireland and the baptism record names his parents as John Dowling and Judith Darby. On the same day/same place, Frances Connor, was baptised and her parents named as James Connor and Judy Dowling, so I suspect John Dowling and Judy Dowling could be siblings. A baptism sponsor was Maureen Dowling, so this could be another sibling.

I have a full history on Christopher who married Bridgat Waters in 1852, they travelled to Liverpool and their first child hristopher was born in Birkenhead in 1854. Christopher and Bridge had 2 other sons, Lawrence and John, and lived out their lives between Birkenhead and Liverpool with Christopher working as a dock labourer, until Bridget's death in 1876 and Christopher's in 1883

Despite extensive research, I can't find any further information on Christopher's parents and would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Rathvilly RC parish covered parts of Wicklow and Carlow in its service area. From looking at the baptismal record on the subscription site Roots Ireland, the Dowling family lived in Ballyhacket townland in Kineagh civil parish in Co. Carlow. There was/is a Ballyhacket Lower and Upper.

Other siblings Mary 1822 Michael 1824 Catherine 1826 John 1830 NOTE all four of these records show Bridget/Biddy Darby or Bridget McDarby but I believe this is the same person shown as Judith. Address was Ballyhacket.

I did not find a marriage record for John Dowling and Bridget/Judith Darby.

The Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kineagh parish from the early 1850s does show a John Dowling in Ballyhacket Lower townland.   https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/carlow/kineagh.php

I did not find a John Dowling baptismal record in Rathvilly parish around 1800.

  • Hello Roger

Thank you so much for your help. I cannot find a marriage record for John and Judith/Bridget/Biddy but you have certainly given me a few more things to look for.

    Best wishes
