Hi,  I have a Lennon family from co. Roscommon.  My great grandmother is Catherine Lennon who married Luke Brennan.  I live in New York  I just learned information on my dna Lennon connections.  A dna match brought me to a headstone stating  John Lennon was born either 1830 or 1838 - a native of Clooncundra, co Roscommon.  I went to search the church records and cannot find a parish for that town.  Would anyone be able to direct me in the right direction to find this family?  There are 4/5 families in New York that would be very happy to learn where their Lennon family is from.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mary

I think the spelling of the townland is Cloonconra and there are two townlands in Roscommon with that spelling. One is in the civil parish of Kilteevan and the other in the civil parish of Kilkeevin. I think it is likely that your Lennons came from Kilteevan civil parish. The RC parish would be Roscommon and Kilteevan. The parish register on the NLI site shows baptisms starting in 1837 but Roots Ireland index shows baptisms starting 1820. A search in the records for Roscommon and Kilteevan RC parish only shows an 1824 John Lennon record which appears to be too early for your interests.

What is the relationship of John Lennon to Catherine Lennon and when was the marriage of Catherine and Luke Brennan. I did not find a record on Roots Ireland.

    Hi Roger

I attached the information on Catherine and Luke Brennan's marriage. It is at that parish. Somehow this John Lennon born as some believe as early as 1820.  His wife was many years younger than him. Which makes me believe this might have been an arranged marriage. My family had many. His wife was Annie Gannon. The headstone reads they both are natives of that town. I am not sure they married here in New York or in Ireland. Their first child was born here in 1862. There are 4/5 families who would love to know where their Lennon family came from.
Again, Roger, I appreciate everything you have done for me.

  • There's also another dna match, Patrick Mullen born 1850ish in Ireland that is in the Lennon family also. I'm thinking his mother might be a Lennon.

The 1824 record in Roscommon/Kilteevan RC parish was for a John Lennon baptized October 28 1824 with father Thomas Lennon and mother Mary Hanly. Sponsors were Michael Curly and Catherine Lough.  Happy New Year!
