I want to come to County Offaly this summer, possibly July or August.  I know DALY is an incredibly common Irish name, but I am determined to come and visit cemetaries, and talk to all the DALYs I can.  My GrGf, Lawrence Daly came to the USA in the 1830s, and settled in Grafton, Lorain county, Ohio. I know a lot about him in the USA, but have not been able to connect with anyone in County Offaly, even though I have paid for research by the Historical Society in Offally.  His history seems to have been lost due to the commoness of the name and the early years (1805-1807) of his birth.  I do have a picture of Lawrence as an older man.  He lived to be 98-102, depending on which date-of-birth is accurate!

I would appreciate any guidance on what to do once I arrive in County Offaly.

Blessings,

  • Hello Patricia

As you have said yourself Daly is a very common name, there were 896 Dalys in the 1901 Census for Kings Co.  Part of King's County census for 1821 survived but it is the bottom part of the County and in that census there were 14 Dalys all living in Birr.  What I would be looking for is the Christian name Lawrence as that Christian names are carried down in families.  There is only one Laurence Daly (diff. spelling) in the 1901 census and he was aged 20 and living in Doory, Silverbrook (which does not exist today) I will ry and look up at another stage where it is now.  Have you any information re siblings names or information on the Ship's passenger list?

    Talk again.

  • Hello Margaret,

Thank you for your reply.  Lawrence had an older brother, James who was born around 1800. Lawrence may have also had the name "Michael".  When Lawrence's son, Joseph married, the marriage certificate signed by the priest said the father's name was "Laurence Michael Daly".  We had several Lawrences in the family, but no Michaels.

There is one Lawrence Daly who arrived in the USA on Ship WILSON from the Port of Sligo.  It arrived in the US on 21 May 1827.  There is another Lawrence Daly who arrived in the US on 13 Dec 1827 from Port of Dublin.  This ship was named THOMAS.  This Lawrence was listed as a blacksmith.  My Lawrence said his birthday was the 13th of December, which he could have adopted upon arrival..  So this may be the correct one.  He was not a blacksmith in Ohio, but a farmer.

There was also a man named FRANCIS MORAN, who apparently came to the USA at the same time as Lawrence.  He settled in Ohio where James and Lawrence lived.  When James died in 1843, Lawrence came to Ohio and married the widow Daly.  Francis Moran was the executor of James will.

I hope some of this helps.

    Many Thanks,

    Patricia Daly
