I am trying to find more details about the Crooks family and/or the Smyth family from Magherafelt area. So far I have James Crooks who was born in Cookstown who married Nancy Hogg. They lived on a farm at Ballymoghan, Magherafelt. I believe that the Smyth Family lived on the farm next door and one of James & Nancy's children (Bessie) married a Smyth. And info would be greatly appreciated as I have not been able to find any information on the Hogg family.
Many thanks,
Rob.

Rob,
Rootsireland has a transcript for the marriage of James Crooks and Nancy Hogg on 14.2.1854 at 1st Magherafelt Presbyterian. James father was William, a farmer, and Nancy’s was Samuel, also a farmer. Both parties lived in Ballymoghan.
Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so the Hogg family probably attended Magherafelt 1st Presbyterian.
Samuel Hogg is listed in Griffiths Valuation for Ballymoghan Beg in 1859. He had plot 3a which was a 29 acre farm. James Crookes was nearby on plot 6a which was a 34 acre farm. Those farms are adjacent and today are down an un-named lane off the Moneymore Rd, just after the junction with the Ballymoghan Rd.

Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. I can see the following children to James & Nancy from 1864 onwards: Robert 19.10.1864; Nancy 22.12.1866; Courtney 7.8.1870; Rachael 6.2.1873; Thomas 22.9.1877 &n David 9.7.1879. For children born 1854 to 1863 you would need to search church records. Probably Magherafelt 1st Presbyterian.

The Hogg family have left by 1901. There was this Smyth family in Ballymoghan Beg in 1901:

Probate abstract: Smyth Robert of Ballymoghan county Londonderry retired farmer died 21 January 1935 Probate Londonderry 3 May to reverend William Alexander Baird Jackson clerk and Thomas Wilson farmer. Effects £603 3s. 9d
Robert’s will should be held in PRONI in paper format.
I couldn’t see a Crooks – Smyth marriage in the records 1872 to 1911.
You can follow the tenants in the farms in Ballymoghan Beg forward from Griffiths Valuation by using the Valuation Revision books on the PRONI website. They’ll show you who the occupants were right up to 1929.
