Looking for any information on my great great grandfather John Daly (b. 1814) son of John Daly and Elizabeth Flanagan, and his family in County Tyrone, Ireland and his wife Eleanor McLeary (b. 1811) (M'Leary / McCleary) of County Derry.

John was born about 1814 - immigration record says he was from Strabane, Tyrone. He married Eleanor McLeary, daughter of James McLeary (occupation book binder) and Elizabeth Anderson, in Londonderry about 1 Oct 1839, at St Columb's Church, County Derry. Both are listed as Church of Ireland. They came to Australia on the John Bull as assisted passengers, arriving on 21 January 1840 at Port Phillip Colony of New South Wales, and settled in West Brunswick, Victoria, Australia (a suburb of Melbourne) and had a farm called Hill Farm. Ship records say John was Catholic, Eleanor was Protestant.

Parents names sourced from death certificates. John died in 1874, his wife Eleanor died in 1889.

They had 4 children all born in Australia. according to John's death certificate - Daniel (abt 1841 - no records but died bef 1874), Isabella (1845-1845), Elizabeth (1847-1907 no children) and John James (1848-1874). John James is my great grandfather. (Reposted with edits from the Tyrone message board)

I have recently found ship records for Daniel Daly (b 1813) who married Bridget (Biddy) in Ireland, who were from Strabane and immigrated to the same place as John and Eleanor (Moonee Ponds (later known as Brunswick) in 1841. Potentially a brother for John!

  • Karina,

Strabane is in the RC parish of Clonleigh. Unfortunately there’s a gap in their baptism records between 1795 and 1836 so if that’s where John was born there may be no record of it.

You may struggle to trace the Daly family.

  • Thanks for that hint Elwyn.

I've looked at the Clonleigh parish records, for the ealiest dates, and did find a handful of Daly families. No John, but there is a Patrick (Patritii) Daly who was married to Isabella (wasn't sure of the surname, possibly Connegan). In the same generation as Patrick there is a Daniel (with son Patrick) and a John (with son William). They might even be all brothers, but I guess there is no way of knowing. I only found one female Daly, named Catherine in these early records, and an Anna Dailey.

The children of Patrick (and Isabella?) that I found were:

Danielum (bap. 17 Nov 1786 - mother's name transcribed as Sally Daly, but I think this is Isabella)

Bridgetum (bap. 4 Mar 1792 - mother's name is transcribed as Isabella Cum).

and Patritii (Patrick) (bap. 9 Mar year not given but there is a marriage on the page noted for 1791) - mother listed as Cathe Daly, but I couldn't even see this name so not sure).

My John born abt 1814 named his firstborn son Daniel and his firstborn daughter Isabella. SO I found this very interesting, but maybe just coincidental. SUch a shame the rest of the records are missing!!
