I am working on my Grandfathers family.  Michael & Ellen (Hickey) Devereux.  They had 12 children. I have copies of letters from some of the children to their sibling in the US. Letters were writen from Kilpeake, New Inn, Clomel and Cashel in late 1800's & early 1900's. I am coming over to Ireland next month, in hopes of finding the cemeteries the family was burind at. Letters say they here buried at the Chapel yard in Cashel  (1892) next to other family members. Again one child buried at Chaple Yard in Cashel 1912? Any idea on what cemetery that is today?  I'd like to get copies of birth/death/marriage certificates.

Other family names (from the daughters)   Bridget married a Tobin, Margaret (Maggie) married a Morrisey

Letters also talk about the state of the farmers in the area, the political situation, the war, etc.  Also, neighbors marriages,

Can anyone help me piece all this together or where I can look when I'm there?

The children are Peter & Paul (twins), (Paul married an Alice according to 1901 census),Michael, Maria, John, Philip (1), Bridget (married a Tobin), Margaret (married a Morrissey), Thomas, John (2nd), Phillip (2nd), Johana (Hanna).

  • Hi CS!

Of the 12 Devereux children mentioned in the last line of your post:

    1) I’m guessing your ancestor is Thomas Devereux (1851-1922) who emigrated to Oregon and had a large family there.

    2) Margaret Devereux of Kilpeak, 25 [thus b. c1861], dau. of Michael Devereux, m. Edward Morrisey of Kilsalla[gh], 38, on 25 Feb 1886, at Cashel, Co. Tipperary.

    That is from:
    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
A great source for original records, but unfortunately it’s often difficult if not impossible to determine a person's relationship, without some sort of additional information (there are many individuals with the same name)..

    3) Paul Devereux of Kilpeak Cashel, of “full” age, son of Michael Devereux, m. Alice Costigan of Castle[…?], 10 Feb 1885, Cahir, Clogheen, Co. Tipperary.

    4) Brigid Devereux (c1854-1913) married Michael Tobin (1851-1902) in 1881 and they had a family in New Inn, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.  Michael/Brigid’s granddaughter Mary (Tobin) O’Connor (1932-2011) visited Oregon in 1980 and met Devereux cousins there at that time, even finding letters that her grandmother Brigid had written many decades earlier.  I corresponded with Mary in 1991-92, mostly about the Tobin family.  I am descended from Michael Tobin’s brother James Patrick Tobin.  Mary has children (step-children) in the New Inn area (and one in the U.S.) who may know more about the Devereux family, if they have their mother’s records.  Coincidentally, we’ll be in Ireland later this month.

Michael Tobin + Brigid Devereux of Kilpeak ("Bridget" Tobin, widow, d. 17 Dec 1913, New Inn, age 59, thus b. c1854 if age correct, son Edmond present at death).
Children all b. New Inn, Cashel, Co. Tipperary:
    1) Patrick Tobin b. 1 Dec 1882; d. 1887
    2) Johanna Tobin b. 12 Dec 1883; d. 1937; unm.
    3) Michael Tobin b. 18 Nov 1885; m. Brigid Tierney 1927; d. 28 Jan 1941, New Inn
    4) Edmond Patrick Tobin b. 4 May 1887
    5) Ellen Mary Tobin b. 1  1889
    6) John Patrick Tobin  b. 1 Sep 1891; d. 20 Oct 1914, New Inn
    7) Mary Tobin b. 24 Feb 1893

How do we best communicate so I can provide Co. Tipperary family contact information?

  • Oh my goodness thanks for replying. I'd love to communicate more . I have copies of those letters you mentioned, and yes there was a visit to Oregon. My grandfather was one of Thomas's children. You can email me at cjsvanda@aol.com. I'd love to compare what we have.

  • Hi!

I am descended from Margaret Devereux  yet am finding it difficult to find much information on the Devereux family. I found this thread extremely useful though and found a lot more that I didn’t know! So I was just wondering if anyone would have anymore information on the Devereux family - specifically Margaret if possible?

    Thanks,
