I have had excellent help from your researchers and was wondering if anyone could give any pointers with my latest query. I have tried to  obtain a death certifificate for Michael joseph Dollard  baptism January 1856 in Carlow. His work history was a fireman/stoker on various ships. On his last voyage aboard SS TEUTONIC 1911/12 from UK to New York be became ill and died in New York, I have investigated this story and recently found a death entry for his name in New York, I applied and have received the death certificate but although it is a seaman the age and ship do not match. I have checked the Teutonic  captains records and did not find his name anywhere. Although I can't find any Teutonic records to try and trace the discharge/death record. I do know that that was his last ship and there must have been proof of death as his dependant child received outdoor monetary relief from Liverpool seaman's orphanage fund 1911/1912. I was told deaths at sea had to be reported to the relevant Embassies but again no result. I would be extremely grateful if anyone of your knowledgeable people could give me any knew ideas which direction to try now. Maggie

  • Maggie,

Perhaps don't discount the NY record.  Death certificates often hold incorrect information.  Michael did not provide the information, obviously.  The person who provided his age, for instance, may have been guessing.  Or the person writing it down may have made an error.  As for the ship's name, maybe the family story was incorrect in some of the details. Or maybe the wrong information was given for the death cert.

On the NY death record, does it indicate where Michael was buried? Is he buried in NY or was he brought home to Ireland? That might be something to investigate.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia thanks for your response, I know from many brick walls how information can be distorted, but although you could be right  and most of the personal details add up, albeit the age is 43 not about 56, the parents William and Mary ( although her surname is wrong)  he was a widower as stated, all b in Ireland. The ship wasn't right (only sailing between South America and New York) but the thing that threw me off my "high" was the dates he was treated at st Vincent's hospital N Y, for pneumonia from 6/18 th March 1906 the certificate was signed 20th MArch 1906, but the orphan payments to the very poor foster mother was not paid until 1911/12. That now is the big puzzle!!!! Any ideas!!! a thanks Maggie

  • Maggie,

It sounds like you've done a lot of thorough research.  But I'm not sure if you looked in UK death records. If not, that might help.

Did you find Michael Dollard in the 1911 UK census? or the 1910 U.S. census?

IF your Michael died in 1906, was his wife alive then?  And then did she die by 1911/12 when the child was with a foster mother?  Did you find that child in 1911 or earlier censuses?  Who was the child living with?

Just some ideas to see if you might glean further information.

One more...NYC has put its vital records online.  You might look for Michael there.  (Or maybe that's where you found the death record?)

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia, thanks for your response. At the moment I am waiting for Liverpool research to check the 1911/1912  records plus years from 1906 to see if any dates tally up with the death certificate details, then if any  match, I will visit Kew to check ships records!!! but with my luck I'm not holding my breath!!! If I have any luck I will be in touch. Thanks again Maggie. Ps the wife died 1904.

  • Risk management is a crucial aspect of forex trading, as the market can be highly volatile and unpredictable. Traders use mt4, such as setting stop-loss orders, diversifying their portfolios, and limiting the size of their positions relative to their account balance, to protect their capital and minimize losses.
