Greeting's to all in Skerries,

My Great-Great-Grandmother was Mary Duff and she married Edward Brady in Skerries on 05.09.1859. At the time Mary lived in New St. Skerries and her Parents are James and Mary Duff. Edward lived in Strand St. and his Parent's are Laurence and Mary Brady, the Parents address's are not recorded. Edward had previously married Catherine Potts, 16.02.1857, and his Parents, Laurence and Mary lived in HILLS, SKERRIES. They are at GRANGE when Edward's brother James married Jane Casey (listed as Brady on some records).1911 Census shows James and family at BARNAGEERA. Older residents of Skerries may remember James's son 'Johnny of the Black Hills' who was known as a Pious Man, he had a sister named Alice.

Laurence Brady is on the Griffiths Valuation, 1852, at Greatcommon, Lusk. There is also a James Duff at Greatcommon on G.V. -I am struggling to find furthur records for this James, the dates overlap with the JAMES DUFF at GRANGE on the G.V., who I am concentrating my search on.

James Duff married Margaret Cavanagh in Balbriggan 14.07.1828. Witness's were Joseph Dowdall and Jane Derham. Civil Death Cert of James - 05.05.1899, James Duff, BALCUNNIN, a gardener, age 85, a widower - informant Ann Casey, Balcunnin.

James and Margarets Children were Baptised in Skerries - some of the records state Margaret Cavanagh and some Margaret Duff.( I do not know if they are the same Margaret although I cannot find another Marriage for James.)

(I am still unable to find a birth of my Mary Duff to James Duff  and a MARY and this is where I need help. Could the answer be as simple as misreading/misrecording the abbreviation of Marg. as Mary or is this my wishful thinking?)

These appear to be connected to my Mary Duff as some of them, Jane, Joseph, Ann and an Ellen and Maria Anna Duffs are sponsors at Mary and Edwards childrens BAPTISMS on NEW ST. in the 1870's.

I have noticed a reference of a burial of  a Patrick Duff who was a Gardener at Milverton and is Buried in St. Movees. Is this Patrick a Son of James or is he older? Does anybody have a transcipt of this grave or knows where I can get furthur info please?

There is an ANN DUff at Milverton on the Griffithe Val. so where does she fit in - related to Patrick?

There is also a Peter and a William Duff having children in the Hills area in the 1850's, does anybody know anything about any of theses Duff's?

I have always known that we were related to the Sweetmans although I had not established a recorded link to them. I had assumed it was to my Brady's but prhaps it was my Duffs. More research is required.

Best wishes to all,

Josie

  • Hi Jane and thanks for your response, I am looking forward to any news.......

There are so many Duffs in Skerries!

I have found a Baptism of a Mary Duff that fits with the dates and Parent's name's for my Mary!!!!!! The only Mary born to a James and Mary (in the records for this time frame)

Baptism, in Skerries, of Mary Duff 17.09.1835. Her Parent's are James Duff and Mary M and the Sponsers are John Armstrong and Bet O'Brien.

Unfortunately it does not state her Mother Mary's full surname, just the letter M, which is unusual.

I have not found another child born to James and Mary, in the local area's, or a Marriage for them.

One of the Sponsors, Bet OBrien ( nee McGlue), seems to be from/lived in Milverton as she has a daughter there, Elizabeth b.27.06.1841.

The date for this Mary's Baptism sit's in the middle of James and Margaret's (  x 2 ??) having their children, (see original posting).

    what a puzzle!

    Kind Regards

    Josie
