I'm hoping to find a connection to the Nugent family. I know they are still living locally, I just don't know how to find them. The Nugent family is from Ballysaggart. Ellen married Thomas Dowling and in 1877 and they lived on Lyrenaglogh. I found them in the 1901 and 1911 census. I'm looking for the name of Ellen's mother. I found a a census in 1901 her living with the Feeney family, her name is Mary. She passed in 1907. Ellen had a sister Mary that married Michael Feeney. I'm hoping to get in touch with anyone from this line.

Thank you!
Candice

  • Hi Candice. My great-Grandmother was Margaret Nugent. She married John McGrath & lived in Cappoquin. She had two daughters Margaret born 5 May 1862 & Ellen born 1863 & in the 1901 census it showed a grand daughter Ellen living with them. Her daughter Margaret (Maggie) was my Grandmother & she emigrated to Australia in 1882 married William Gibbs an Architect.& they lived in Charleville, Queensland, Australia. They had nine children & my mother was the youngest. I wonder if we have a connection particularly bearing in mind she named her daughter Ellen & her grand-daughter was also Ellen. My Grandmother had a relative Minnie Curran who emigrated to Canada.  Maybe no link but I thought it was worth a comment as I do not know details of my g-grandmother’s parents. Regards Marie

  • Catherine Nugent married Michael Walsh in 1859.  She bore him 7 children.  Both Catherine and Michael died before 1882 probably of Typhoid Fever (as per a family document). Sometime before 1882 her two eldest daughters emigrated to Boston area of U.S. In 1882 they brought their remaining 4 orphaned siblings to live with them.    They were Neighbors of the Feeneys in Tooradoo, Ballyduff District. from 1860 to ca 1880.   Other Nugents named as marriage witnesses or as godparents to her children were Michael Nugent, Alice Nugent Joanna Nugent Power The documents that Ive found mark her marriage and the baptisms of all of her children, 6 of whom lived beyond infancy.  There are several documets recording birth and death for a Catherine Nugent ( also Nugant) but I have no link to any to prove connection to My Catherine Nugent. If family naming counst as a clue, her daughters were Mary, Bridget Theresa, Ellen (Nellie) , Alice and Katherine in that order.  Her one son was named Thomas  who was baptised in Cooleshal not Tooradoo. There are numerous families in Cooleshal that appear to cross over with the residents of Tooradoo.

I dont expect anyone now living to actually remember our Catherine Nugent in person, but if any of these individuals appear in your family historyI would greatly appreciate your help in fleshing out Catherine's story.
