Trying to trace the birth of my paternal grandmother Ellen Power. 1901UK census shows here living in Newport, Wales aged 21 and born in Youghal.

Married Frederick William Curthoys on 13/10/1903 aged 22. Her father was Patrick Power, a deceased seaman.

The 1939 UK register records her birth date as 10/10/1881 again in Youghal.

I cannot find any record of her birth in 1881. A search of the records does show an Ellen Power but the actual birth register for the entry shows Ellen Hickey not Ellen Power.

I have tried searching her father and the only link I have found is in the 1901 Irish Census. This shows a Patrick Power aged 45 married to Mary, aged 48 living at 8 Buckley Lane, Youghal. The age would have been about right but he is recorded as deceased on Ellen's marriage certificate so would have died between the census date and 13/10/1903. Again I can find no record of a death.

The 1891 census would have confirmed if Ellen was the daughter of that Patrick Power, but the lack of the census is another story.

Sorry for the long winded message but if anyone can help I would be deeply grateful.

    Possibly Ellen had made herself younger than her actual age when she came to England.

    I checked the Youghal RC records and there was an Ellen Power who was baptized in Youghal on June 18 1876 father Patrick Power and mother Frances Gleeson. This Ellen was the youngest of at least seven children,

    This Ellen may not be yours but consider this info as a lead.

    Many thanks for that. I hadn't considered the possible age difference.

    The lovely Ellen is proving to be very elusive. Like most people on this journey I wish I had asked my father for details before his passing. 

    I've found her on 3 censuses in the UK where her birthplace is listed as

    1901: Youghal

    1911: Newport Wales

    1921: Cork

    Then in the 1939 register back to Youghal. That's the only document that shows her birthdate as 10/10/1881.

  • I believe this is the birth record of your Ellen. Her father was Patrick, who worked for the Coast Guard; this agrees with the earlier record you mentioned, saying he was a seaman.

    Two options now. Ellen Power both born to Patrick. 

    13/5/1876 Coast Guard

    14/6/1876 Sailor
