Hello, I’m visiting Ireland this summer and would like to trace my Elliott heritage. There was a Hugh and William Elliott from the county Leitrim who came to Canada about 1844. Hugh was married to Catharine Kirkpatrick. William had married Mary Irwin and his son William was born about 1829 in Leitrim. Recent DNA results show their probably from the Parish Cloonclare, maybe Manorhamiton townland. Hugh was born about 1799 and William about 1798. There was the names of Mary, John, Elizabeth, Richard and Simon as children in their families. They were both C of E. Thanks in advance for any help. Marcia Earl

  • Hi Marcia,

I'm afraid I couldn't find any birth/baptism or marriage records for your Elliotts on www.rootsireland.ie/

There was better news on the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) which has 47 Elliotts in Leitrim 1834 including 7 Williams (no Hughs) all in Clooncare. I couldn't see Manorhamiton mentioned but you may want to google the addresses from the Tithes to see if there is any connection to Manorhamiton with the addresses given. Unfortunately the Tithes give address details and amounts paid but no family info.

You might also like to search for Irwin & Kirkpatrick to see if there are any nearby.

There are no Leitrim records in the Irish Censuses until 1851which is too late if they left in 1844

  • Dear Marcia:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There are a few places that you may find helpful for your visit this summer.

The parish of Clooneclare has a very good parish website and you might note same for reference.

In addition, there is the Leitrim Genealogy Centre which is located at Ballinamore, County Leitrim.

  • Hey I am definitely related to the people in Ireland who you are looking for. I live in Guelph ,Ontario Canada and my relatives immigranted to Canada during the potato famine. I know where the gravestones are that the family you are searching for. I too am looking for any relatives still living. I have quite a bit of information. I can date family members that were born in the late 1700's. I have the missing connection to Mary Irwin Elliott and William Elliott. They actually built the farmhouse I was born and raised in. The farm was in our name for over 100 years. Please feel free to contact me. I visited Leitrim Ireland last year and Carrick on the Shannon and have photos of the area. I can send you some photos. Hope to hear from you.

  • i am a bit late to the conversation here, but stumbled upon the chain here after randomly searching Leitrim County. I also have an Elliott tree that dates back to Leitrim County, will have to blow the dust off the binder that we have, last dates were mid 1840's. My descendants settled in the community around Mitchell, Ontario. I have dreams of tracing back to Ireland when I can spend some time getting lost in the area and don't have a timeframe. Great links that have been provided. my email is mwelliott22@gmail.com if you would like to connect directly

Hi - I am Lee Elliott. I am related to the people you mention. John Elliott, originally from Manorhamilton was my great, great, great, great (x4) grandfather. His son William, then his son Fred, then his son George, then his son Gordon then me are all from north east England. John moved to Scotland from Manorhamilton then to England. I have actually been to Manorhamilton only today and this is how I stumbled across this message. I have been to the Church of Ireland graveyard today and taken photos and videos of all the graves. If you feel we might be related please get in touch! Lee

  • Hi Lee, I'm please you got in touch. I'm interested in any birth and death dates or places of burial for your John and his son William. Do you have any information on their families? Are their wives maiden names known? If you can add any of this information it will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Marcia Earl

  • Hi Marcia. This is what I know so far: John Elliott (from the Manorhamilton area) 1832 - 1909 married Julia Norton 1829 - 1898. Their son William Elliott 1857 - 1910 married Margaret A Smith 1868 - 1956. Their son Frederick W Elliott 1892 - 1937 married Isabella Brown 1894 - 1943. They had a son George Elliott (my grandad). I think John Elliott from Ireland had a father called Anthony Elliott born in 1802 but I am not sure. Are we distant relatives and do you know who the father of John Elliott was? Lee

  • Hi Lee, It is looking more like we are cousins. I searched ancestry.com and found a tree with the information you gave me on it. The tree is emmaelliott99. This person found John Elliott's family on a 1841 census with the following information;

    Margaret Scott Age 75

    John Elliott Age 45

    Name

John Elliott Age 9 Estimated Birth Year 1832 where born Roxburghshire, Scotland, Civil parish Cavers, County Roxburghshire, Address Sheeplawcross Parish Number 785

    Margaret Elliott Age 25

    Mary Elliott Age 20

    Isabel Elliott Age 14

    George Elliott Age 11

    John Elliott Age 9

    Janet Elliott Age 7

    Betty Elliott Age 5

    Agnes Elliott Age 3

I also checked a few Elliott cousin's dna matches (that live here in Canada), and they have over a hundred Norton surnames as their distant cousin matches. We used familytreedna.com to do our dna tests. Some of these distant cousin matches we are getting have put up trees. If you ever consider doing a test, I and others would get a match if we are truly related. I will keep my eye out for any further information on John and Julie Elliott. I find it strange that this tree on ancestry.com mentioned has no information on this couple being in Ireland. I'm determined to find my great great grandfather Robert Elliott's family in Ireland. Thank you again for your help.

  • Hi Marcia

Late to the conversation here, but I am a direct decendent of William (brother of Hugh) who came to Canada in 1945. Would be interested in anything you have found on this family. I have only the following to show that they came from County Leitrim:

ELLIOTT, William (d.), was born in Co. Leitrim, Ire., where he farmed 20 acres. He came to Canada in 1845, and set. in W. Gwillimbury. In the summer of 1851, with his son William, he came to Maryborough, and located on lot 1, con. 2. In the winter he started to come in, again, but could not on account of the snow, and was obliged to return, but, on the advice of his son, after a few days, started back, following the Elora road, and bought a squatter's right to 100 acres of George Brewester, for which he paid $120. The snow was very deep that year. They put up a shanty and his son cleared eight or nine acres. William, Jr., went to Gwillimbury, and worked during a couple of harvests to secure the price of a yoke of oxen. William Elliott,.Sr., belonged to the Church of England. He m. Mary Irwin in Ire., and d. at the age of 75. Issue: William, Mrs. Wm. Drewery, Rothsay; Mrs. Wm. Wells, Mrs. William Cowan (d.), Mrs. Thomas Winn, Man.; and Mrs. James Mitchell, Drayton.
From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto:Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906

William, b. Co. Leitrim, Ire., 1829, was about fifteen years old when he crossed the ocean. In 1851 he came to Maryborough with his father, and later returned to GwilIimbury, returning again to Maryborough in 1852. He did nearly all of the chopping of the farm, and went to Elora for grist. He was the first man to take a load of lumber across the river, west of the centre side road. He had 600 acres when he retired from farming, with not a cent against it, after having started with nothing. He has been a very progressive and successful man. He at one time had a farm in Wallace, which he sold, it being the only place of his that changed hands. He had 100 acres in Arthur, and 300 in West Luther, and later purchased 100 acres, the east half of lot 9, Con. 14, Maryborough and lived on the north half of lot 10, con. 14, for many years. He had a threshing outfit, and threshed for thirty or forty people in the district. He was Trustee of S.S. No. 7 for nine years, and Township Councillor two years. He is a member of the English Church and in politics is a Reformer. He m. Catharine, dau. of Andrew Kirkpatrick. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Armstrong, Proton Tp., and Alexander, West Luther: Robert Irwin, Maryborough; Mrs. Thomas Henderson,: Mrs. William Henderson, W. Luther; Catharine (d. 17); George, a farmer near Chesley and William, on Lot 9, con. 14.

I have Hugh being married to Isabella Bates though.

    Cheers, Dessia

  • I may be grasping at straws, but I'm hitting dead ends, so thought I would see if anyone can make a connection.

I am actually looking for my Stretton family (Robert and Mary Cooke and their children), who left the Cavan/Leitrim area about 1845 and ended up in Canada. Two things point me to the Elliott family:

    1. In the 1841 Census in Derreskit, Killashandra Parish, there was a Charles Elliott (c1785-1810), his wife Susan (b1782) (married 1803), children Archy (b1808?) and Fanny (c1822-1897). Also there is a 12-year-old James Stretton, who I believe is my 2x great-uncle (1st child of said Robert and Mary Stretton). I can't find the other Strettons. I know that Mary Cooke Stretton's family were in Gortermone, Leitrim for the 1821 Census (18km away).

    2. The farm that Robert Stretton bought in Reach, County Durham, Ontario, Canada in 1845 was purchased from a Christopher Elliott. Coincidence? No idea!

If this makes sense to anyone out there, I would love to hear from you.

    Thanks, Robyn.
