My Paternal Grandfather Dominick was born in Ballyglass in 1872 and died in Dublin 1935. From this starting point, with original records and family support, I have been able, with some conviction, to trace my Great Gandfather Thomas Mannion who was a small farmer living in Ballyglass and born in Tuam November 1821 - he died in 1906 in Swinford. My Great Grandmother was born in 1829, one Margaret Hunt and she died in 1899 in Claremorris. From this I have been able to extrapolate to my Great,Great Grand parents who I believe are Bryan Mannion and Margaret Mullen, I think he was born 1798 and died 1870 in Strokestown while I think she was born in 1805 and died 1870 in Ballinasloe. I do emphasis that these records are really not positive and consequently I am finding it very hard to cross check these details and to have any hooks upon which to trace these details. Clearly I am also having difficulties in going back beyond 1798 - I understand the difficulties regarding this but.....in both cases I would really appreciate any assistance guidance or help.

Thank you

Regards

  • Hi Roger,

the large distances between the locations you mention would put some doubt in my mind. There is a Dominick Mannion born in 1872 to Thomas Mannion and Margaret Hunt with an address Ballyglass. The registration district was Castlerea.

I think Dominick was an RIC officer and it might be worthwhile looking up his service record.

A Thomas Mannion of Ballyglass East died in 1902 aged 69 - witness was his wife Margaret - see the link - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you Jim for your reply, my grandfather was indeed a member of the RIC, I have his records and the details of all of the postings he had. Dominick was born in 1872 in Ballyglass. Your data regarding Thomas's death raises more questions the it answers....!! As his date of birth then becomes 1832 or 33 but at this time I have some reasonably strong evidence of a Thomas Mannion born in 1821 - baptised 13 Nov 1821 in Tuam - I even have the witnesses names. If these are correct then the age on the death certificate for 1902 is erroneous - but why? however if the certificate age is correct then this changes the complexion of Thomas's birth date which in turn will impact my thoughts on Bryan Mannion - hey ho - and we do this for pleasure!
