Looking for any possible family members of and relations of my 2nd great grandmother Mary Looney. Her parents were Patrick Looney and Joanna Hartigan.
She was married to Cornelius Lanahan( possibly spelled Lenihan, Linehan or Lenahan!) upon their arrival in Boston Mass USA in 1848. She settled with her husband in Washington DC and was joined by her father Patrick. Alledgedly her husband Cornelius was from Patricswell, Croagh or Croom but that has yet to be confirmed. I am sure Mary was from this parish!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest Cornelius Lenehan (and variants) baptismal record I could locate was in 1840 which appears to be too late for your interests. I also could not locate the record for Mary Looney but did find two baptismal records for younger siblings of Mary. The first was in Croom and the second in Manister which would normally be the parish for people living in Monateranenagh civil parish. The transcription of the 1839 record showed an unusual name so I went to the parish register and saw that the name was Johanna.

I also located the 1833 marriage record for Patrick Looney and Johanna Hartigan.in Manister. So was Mary 15 when she married or did they marry later?

  •  Deat Sir: Thank you so very much for your response and providing more information I was not aware of. In response to your question about the marriage of Mary Looney at 15 I am truly not sure as I was never aware of her exact birth year. Her husband Cornelius allegedly told US Census workers he was born about 1831 which would have made him 17 when he arrived in Boston and was married. Having said this it is certainly a strong possibilty that Mary Looney could have been 15 when married. Census workers spelled Lanahan many different ways before listing it as its spelled today. Mary stayed in the same Washington DC neighborhood near the present day Union Train Station for the rest of her life. She raised a large family.
Any information you can give or have given is so much appreciated.

    Thank you so much
