Good Day, I am trying to find documentation confirming my husbands ggg grandfather date of birth.  We have family photo with his date of birth written on the back of the photo , Plus we have an estimated date of birth from his age wrtten on his Death Notice..

George Henry Loch 1825–1900

Possible Baptism or Birth Date
21 JUNE 1825   • Youghal, County Cork, Ireland
or
abt Jan. 22, 1825  • Youghal, County Cork, Ireland

DEATH 11 JANUARY 1900 • "Kaal Valley", Winburg, Orange River Colony, South Africa

We think his estimated Age was written incorectly on his Death Notice. So the Death Notice Age ( at birth)  and Photo have two different dates.  We are trying to find a baptism record or birth record to confirm his correct date of birth.  We have information on  his whole family line tracing back many generations . His parents are Major John Loch of Youghal (1775 - 1831) married to Bridget O'Connor (1795 - ? ) . His parents John and Bridget were married on 19 April 1818 St Mary's Church of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This link https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf   shows the status of Church of Ireland parish registers in Ireland. If you scroll down to Youghal, the record indicates that the Youghal records are maintained in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. I think eventually those records will be digitized and placed online. In the interim, if you want to get the record, you might need a professional researched to check the Youghal records.

    Hello,

I was very interested in reading the above article.  I have looked up the database for the local cemetery and found the following:

Captain John Loch died on 17th January 1831 and is buried in here in St. Mary's Collegiate Church grounds in Youghal       -  it also states the Record source came from

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Comb Reg C of I BK D 1816-1862

    William Loch died 26th January 1683                                                                                                                                                            "         Comb Reg C of I BK A 1665 - 1720

    Elizabeth Locke  died 3rd November 1902   - she was born 1834                                                                                                                           Comb Reg C of I BK 1865 - 1980

    John Locker died 10th October 1769                                                                                                                                                                       Comb Reg C of I BK B 1729 - 1779

Looked up the Newspaper Archives and found the following:

    Marriages

    1]

At Tuam, Richard M. Savage Esq., of Mount Desmond, Co. Galway and Sovereign of Tuam, to Catherine Teresa, daughter of the late Captain Lock,

of Youghal formerly of the 25th Regiment.                           Newspaper -  Nenagh Guardian on Wednesday May 6th 1840.

    Marriage

    2]

August 31, 1840, at Tuam, Robert De Vere Hunt, Esq., Surgeon, to Margaret Anne, youngest daughter of the late Captain Lock  of Youghal.

Newspaper  -  Nenagh Guardian on Saturday September 12th 1840.

I scanned both of the above marriages from the newspapers if needed.

I also found the following link to a Loch Genealogy Form.

    https://www.british-genealogy.com/forum/threads/66372-The-Loch-Family-of-Rachan-Estate-Peebleshire

Looked up the birth for John Loch but so far cannot find anything on him.   But found a birth date for a William Loch - see attached word.doc. below.

    will keep looking

    regards

  • Wow, thank you so much for all the information you found.  I actually got into contact with Jane the lady that posted on the Forum about a month or so back while trying to find information on the Loch family. It turned out she is my husband's second cousin 2 x removed. She has searched this family line for many years, and has found allot of information online tracing the family line back much further.

Unfortunatley with most family research, there isn't always documented proof available, so we are working together to find actual proof of dates. Jane actually visited Ireland in hopes of searching the St Mary Church Cemetery, but the day she went it was closed, so she was extremely disappointment because she had to leave shortly after that back home.

It will be great if you can attach those two newspaper articles you scanned of the Loch girl's marriages.  Just today, I found the grave photo for Captain John Loch's first wife Margaret Quinlan at St Mary's but John's grave stone was nowhere to be found.  I know allot of the older grave stones have disintegrated over the years.  Margaret died shortly after giving birth to I think her 4th kid.  John later married Bridget O'Connor, and their son George Henry Loch is my husbands and Jane's family line.

We have Captain John Loch death as 14 Jan 1831, so I wonder if the 17 Jan 1831 is the date he was buried?  We also do not have proof of this, so I will definitely look at that reference you gave.   We also didn't have the date of baptism for William, so you have been a tremendous help.       Thank you for taking the time to post this information. Have a great day. Regards Helen & Roger

  • Hello,

Delighted we could add to your family tree.  The Collegiate Church opens 10.00 - 4.30 daily.  I have looked up another database and only a Margaret Loch is mentioned along with her daughter.  There is no picture of the Captain's Headstone/Tombstone - also another synario is the Captain is buried there but nobody put his name on the Tomb.
Here is a link to another database - didn't have time to go through it to see all the names.

Hope this is of some use to you.

  • Hi Phyl,

Thank you so much for the Update and copies. I have been through that website and I did have the picture of the Grave for Margaret Loch and Unknown Daughter and was wondering the same thing, Was John perhpas buried in the same Tomb?

The strange thing is we do not know who this daughter might be?      The website states she was 13 which would make Margaret 17. That means she was born before Margaret was married to Capain John Loch. Perhaps she isn't the daughter of John Loch.     Is there anywehre we can find out the name of this kid?

We only have 3 daughters for John Loch

    1st Marriage

    John and Margaret Quinlan

    1. Eleanora Maria Loch

    2nd Marriage

    John and Bridget O'Connor

    2. Catherine Teresa Loch

    3. Margaret Anne Bridget Loch

    Kind Regards

    Helen & Roger
