Hi,      I am looking for the grave of my great great grandfather Rodger Gorman. He married Ellen Ford. They had at least 6 children. Ellen and the six appear in the 1860 federal census in Massachusetts. I have found the Irish baptism records for William (1826), Rodger (1828), Patrick (1831), Ellen (1832), Daniel (1834), Margaret (1836), and John, my great grandfather, (1839). John's death certiificate lists Mitchelstown as where he was born. All baptism records list the parents as Ellen Ford and Rodger Gorman. I cannot find a Roman Catholic marriage for them.

I have been searching records on-line for a grave site for Rodger., thinking I could do this research by myself. Not so. I am thinking he did not come to the U.S. but I can't find his final resting place. We are coming to Ireland in a week (this trip came up quickly) and would be like to be able to visit his gravesite or those of his family, unfortunately I have no other information.

Any thoughts or direction are greatly appreciated.

  • Dear Camille:  Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

You might note that Brigown graveyard in Mitchelstown has been recorded and transcribed and you can view it online:   http://historicgraves.com/graveyard/brigown/co-brgw

In the meantime, I have passed on your query to our volunteers in the neighbouring area who may be able to assist you further.

Please let me know if you need anything further.

Have a wonderful trip and safe travels!!

    All the best,

    Hi Jane,

Thanks you for your assistance. I have previously reviewed the names of the souls listed on the Brigown cemetery database. I checked it again, but no Gorman’s. There are some that are not listed, but only a picture of the headstone as the writing is illegible or cannot be seen. Maybe one of these is Rodger Gorman. Hopefully a volunteer in the area will uncover something. Thanks  again.

Hi,  We had a wonderful wonderful time in Ireland!! Did visit the Mallow Heritage Centre which houses the records for Mitchelstown, County Cork. Baptisms of the children of Rodger Gorman and Ellen Ford were confirmed. Found one other child, a twin. They do not have a baptism record for Rodger or Ellen nor do they have a marriage certificate. Any thoughts on where to look next.

Also did not find the grave site for Rodger.

Appreciate any help you may be able to provide.

  • Hi Camille:

Thank you for the update and delighted to hear that you had a great trip and found some new information.

You might keep an eye out on the following websites for graveyards that have been recorded:

    http://www.corkarchives.ie/collections/overviewandguidetosomemajorcollections/cemeteryrecords/

    and

    http://www.historicgraves.com

They continuously add new graveyards and it may be that you will find more information about them.  If the Brigown graveyard was recorded by Historic Graves, you might check with them directly as they would have had local volunteers record and transcribe.  One of them may be able to assist you.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
