  • Gill:

The marriage records for Ballinlough RC parish start in late August 1839 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1073  Likely the marriage for John and Margaret occurred prior to August 1839. I did a search on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a record.

I assume you have the baptismal records for youngers sisters Honot, Catherine and Anne?

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you - yes, I have the baptisms of the other 3 girls as well.

Do you think John and Margaret would have married elsewhere, or is it that records were just not kept before August 1839?

    Thank you for your help.

  • Gill:

I would think they married in one of the chapels in the parish (see note below). Pre-1839 records were kept but lost or discarded by the parish priest or someone else at a later date. This situation happened in many Irish RC parishes.

I looked up the 1837 Lewis Topographical Dictionary for Kiltullagh civil parish. At that time, there was no chapel in Ballinlough but chapels in Garranlahan and Cloonfad. The Garranlahan and Cloonfad chapels became part of the parish of Ballinlough.
