I have two Irish brickwalls.  The first is Audley Hamilton, who is said to be the son of Rev. James Hamilton and Catherine Leslie.  I can find no solid evidence of this.  He was most likely born in the late 1670’s.  He is said to have married Eleanor Adams.  Have good solid evidence back to Archibald Hamilton who immigrated to America in 1733.  His wife was Frances Calhoun who was suppose to be his first cousin—daughter of Judith Hamilton and Rev Alexander Calhoun, Crochhouse, Newtownstewart, Tyrone.  Judith is the daughter of James and Leslie.  Archibald and Frances’ oldest son was named Audley.  Does anyone know where I might find records to verify whether Audley was the son of James and Catherine? So much for brickwall #1.

Rev. James Hamilton. Born in 1638. James died abt 1685, he was 47. Styled eldest son of Rev. Andrew Hamilton, he was Prebendary of Kilskerry 1662-1666, and later rector of Donagheady, Co Tyrone, and Taghboyne, Co. Donegal, in 1667 and styled of Mountgavelin. Collated Archdeacon of RAPHOE 1674/5 and Chaplain to the Earl of Arran, he was promised a Bishopric by King Charles and in 1683 was a candidate for a bishopric of Dromore, but the Duke of Ormond considered him unfit. He and his wife had a large family including those given. James married Catherine Leslie, daughter of James Leslie. They had the following children:
5 i. Andrew (1669-1753)
6 ii. William (-1729)
iii. James. Born in 1675. James entered Trinty College Dublin in 1693.
iv. Ezekeal. Born in 1680. Ezekeal obtained a B.A. from Trinity College Dublin in 1703.
v. Judith. abt 1700 Judith married Rev. Alexander Colhoun. Alexander was rector of Templecarne.

Brickwall #2 Rev Andrew Hamilton Andrew Hamilton M.A. Born in 1613. Andrew was prebendary of Kilskerry, Co. Tyrone, Ireland and rector of Magheracross, Co. Fermanagh, 1639-1662. He was still alive in 1680. Andrew married Rebecca Galbraith, daughter of Lieut.-Colonel James Galbraith. Rebecca was from Mountgavelin, Northern Ireland. They had the following children:
2 i. James (1638-~1685)
3 ii. Andrew (-1691)
4 iii. Margery

  • Sorry, I hit post before I finished.  Who are Andrew’s parents?  My Father’s DNA matches a descendent of Hew/Hugh Hamilton of Lisdivin (and his brother William if Balleyfatton).  And indeed, Rebecca Galbraith’s female relatives married into these two branches, but I can not find any evidence of how they were related.  BTW, this Hamilton DNA profile also matches the Abercorn Hamiltons, associated with Mountgavlin.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks in advance.

  • Researching exactly the same thing, and hitting the same walls. Can't find anything past Andrew Hamilton Sr. + Rebecca Galbraith. And I can't find anything concrete at all about Audley Harrison Hamilton.

  • Your mistake is with Rev. Andrew. James was the son of Fredrick of Manor Hamilton. He married his 1st cousin, Catherine Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Abercorn. Go to: http://www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk/abercorn1606.htm?zoom_highlight=James…

  • Then look up the history on Montgavelin. Then it will all make sense!

  • Hi, I think I'm descended from Audley Harrison Hamilton as my mother and her sister researched our Hamilton ancestors who settled in the Tennessee River valley in northern Alabama and Mississippi.  My mother's tree is on ancestry.com.  She recently passed away November 2019.

Am reading a book about Sir Frederick Hamilton and the details of his family by the author made me question my mother's work.  According to the book, Sir Frederick's son James Harrison Hamilton married Catherine Hamilton not Leslie but he died at age 26 fighting the Irish rebels.  Her dates for him, 1630-1685 match Rev. James Henry Hamilton whose father is a Dr or Reverend Andrew Hamilton not James Harrison Hamilton Sir Frederick's son.  It seems that family was from Londonderry Ireland as Audley Harrison Hamilton died at Donegal castle.

Am utterly confused too.  Hamilton is a very common name and James Hamiltons abound in Scotland as the ducal house of Hamiltons patriarch is also named James.

  • Hello, my father has been a member of the Hamilton YDNA project for 17 years.  He matches a descendent of Hugh Hamilton of Lisdivin.  Hugh is the brother of William of Ballyfatton and they are said to be the sons of John Hamilton in Blantyre.  They are also in the Group B Hamiltons which includes the Abercorn ducal line.

  • Hi,

I’ve a few comments and questions about this family.

    • Where is James Hamilton of Mountgavelin styled "eldest son of Rev. Andrew Hamilton”?
    • Someone mentioned this James Hamilton of Mountgavelin was son of Frederick Hamilton of Manor Hamilton.  Surely James Hamilton of Manor Hamilton is a different person?
    • Is it possible James Hamilton of Montgavelin was married twice.  First to Anne Cunningham (daughter of Alexander Cunningham, Dean of Raphoe) who was widow of Robert Echlin?  Second to Catherine Leslie (daughter of James Leslie) – she appears to have recently widowed in 1690.
    • Could James Hamilton of Mountgavelin also have been father of Jane Hamilton who married Oliver McCausland of Strabane (c1637-1722)?  Hard to pin down her dates, because Oliver was probably married 2 or more times.
