Hello everyone,

I am looking for information on the maternal side of my family. My 2X Great-Grandfather was John Heney (name changed to Heaney when he emigrated to Canada). He was born around 1846. My Great-Grandfather, Thomas Heaney was baptized in Kilteely, Limerick in 1867. His mother was Julia Hynes or Hines. I understand that they may have lived in Croom and that they had a small farm that was abandoned when they emigrated. I was wondering if someone might be able ot help me pinpoint the old family farm in maps. Any and all information pertaining to my family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cynthia

I  searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a February 27 1859 marriage record at St. Patrick's church in Limerick city. Roots Ireland had transcribed the groom's surname as Meany but looking at the actual register, the name appears to be Heany  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635038#page/25/mode/1up Wife Julia Hynes

I can see four baptismal/birth records for the couple: Darby December 27 1859 Anne Deember 1 1861 John October 15 1865 and a civil birth record for Thomas December 22 1867. The three baptisms were at the Kilteely/Dromkeen RC church. On the civil birth record for Thomas, the family was living in Dromkeen.

See third record at this link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03459/2270342.pdf

The Griffiths Valuation survey was taken in Co. Limerick in 1850. I only see three Heny/Heany/Heaney and none were in Dromkeen or Croom parishes. My guess is that the family lived in towns like Dromkeen. They may have had a farm but I don't see any records to confirm.

  • Cynthia,

I saw on RootsIreland four baptismal records for John and Julia’s children. Three of them spelled the name “Heaney.” Only Thomas’s record used “Heny.”

Thomas’s baptismal record noted that he lived in the townland of Dromkeen. The others did not indicate an address.

    I hope this is helpful.
