Hi. I'm trying to trace the burial location of my grandfather Patrick J Hogan who died in Vicarstown, Co. Laois in 1918 but was buried in Offaly - I believe somewhere near Ballysheil or somewhere in the parish of Gallen. He married Ellen Carroll in 1902 in Cloghan church. They had one child. Unfortunately Ellen died in 1907, after whick Patrick J moved to work and live in Vicarstown, Co Laois for the Grand Canal Company. He remarried there and had 3 children (Peggy, Kevin and PJ - who was my father). When he died he was buried alongside his first wife, which was the custom/practice at the time.

My family and I would like to locate the grave of Patrick J and Ellen so if you have any information at all please respond. Even if you could send me a list of graveyards in the Ballysheil, Cloghan, Belmont area that we could visit to search for a grave.

Thank you.

  • Hi VHogan,

Google: Offaly Burial Ground Data Base - 2015. It is too large to post.

  • Some of these links might help, the Cloghan & Banagher Parish website might help, as you could message them and ask for listing of Graveyards near Cloghan

  • Hi

I was recently asked this question by another person (I live in this area) and I checked with a elderly neighbour and they told me at the time in late 1890s early 1900s a lot of people from this area were either buried in Kilcamon cemetery (which is on the Birr road out of Cloghan) or else in  The Priory graveyard in Ferbane (it's near the nursing home). Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    E McK
