I have found, who I believe to be my great-great grandfather.  In the information I have received it states he was living in the townland/parish/place of 'Kilcominbeg' Co Tipperary.

I cannot find this on any map.  Would anyone have any idea where it might be?

Thanks

Barry

  • Kilcominbeg is probably a reference to the townland of 'Kilcommon Beg', which is located in Caher civil parish. The townland is located a short distance (abt 4km) to the south of the town of Caher/Cahir, see the entry of the placename database.

The townland is listed as 'Kilcommanbeg' on Griffith's Primary Valuation on AskAboutIreland, although on the page image it looks more like Kilcommonbeg to me. No sign of any Sheppard properties at that time - 1852.

  • Barry:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There is a townland called Kilcommon Beg in Caher civil parish. If you use Google Maps, the townland is four kilometers south of the town of Cahir. If you believe this is the place you are looking for and you need more assistance, we can alert our parish liaison for the parish.

  • Hi Shane,

Thanks very much for this information.  I thought that it may have been connected to Kilcommon, further north.

    Thank you,
    Barry

  • Thanks Roger,

Yes, that would be great if I could get some help regarding this.

Most of my family (all the Sheppards I've found so far) were in North Tipperary, so having one generation takes them out of that locality.

My ancestors were Quakers, and their meeting house was in Mountmellick, which is why I thought it might be Kilcommon, a bit further north in the county.

    Thank you

  • Sorry, I meant having one generation down near Cahir takes them out of that location.

  • Hi BJ.

If you Google Sheppard estate record Sheppard, Landed estates database , NUI, Galway, you should be able to see material on your Sgeppards.

Best  of luck, let me know how you  get on.

  • Hi Thomas,

Thanks a million for this.  This confirms a lot more information I've gathered from several sources.

My extended family still live in that area of North Tipperary, so it is a welcome development to find this.

There are a number of Sheppards in the Quaker burial ground up near Quakerstown/Ballingarry.

The James Sheppard who was my great-great grandfather had land in Ballingarry parish in the 1834 Tithe Applotment Books.

Thanks everyone for your help, things are finally coming together.
