My ancestor, Jane Dunne, married Charles Archbold in Bennekerry, Tinryland Parish, County Carlow in 1850.  One of the witnesses to the marriage was Elizabeth Cummins.  The Archbold marriage produced 3 children: Mary 1850, James 1852 and Ellen 1853 - all born in Bennekerry.  Recently I came across a marriage record of a Jane Dunne and Patrick Dunne in Bennekerry, Tinryland Paish, County Carlow in 1843.  One of the witnesses to the marriage was also Elizabeth Cummins.  Since Dunne is such a common name, I assume Jane and Patrick were probably not related.  The Dunne marriage produced 2 children: Elizabeth 1843 Bennekerry and Patrick 1846 Burton Hall.

I can find no baptism records for Jane Dunne, but I believe she was born between 1815 and 1822. Her death record in1894 lists her as 78 years old.  I can find no baptism or death records for Patrick Dunne which I can be reasonably certain it is the same person who married Jane.

I have tried to find more information on Elizabeth Cummins as well.  Not only was she witness to the two Dunne marriages, but she was also sponsor to Patrick Dunne's 1846 baptism.  Additionally, there was a Kitty Cummins who was sponsor for James Archbold's baptism in 1852. (So Elizabeth Cummins was witness to his wedding and Kitty Cummins was sponsor to his second child's baptism.) Interestingly, there is a Darby Cummins who lived next to Charles Archbold in 1852, according to Griffith's Valuation records.

1. Does it seem likely that the two Jane Dunnes are the same person?  Opinions, please.

2. Is it likely Elizabeth Cummins and Kitty Cummins are sisters? Cannot find any records that link the two.

3. Is it likely that Darby Cummins is the husband of either Elizabeth or Kitty? Cannot find a marriage record of either to support this.

This was a Catholic family and did not seem to move from the Bennekerry, Urglin, or Burton Hall areas in County Carlow.

  • Hi, Keep in mind that Jane might also have been called Johanna, Joan, Joanne. Perhaps Jenny too.

  • I understand name variations but help me to understand how this is related to my question in which there are clearly 2 Jane Dunnes.  I think I may br missing your point :)

  • Hi,

When you wrote that you couldn't find a baptismal record for Jane, I thought it might be possible she was recorded under an alternate  name. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for clarifying.  If I find a baptism record for Joan, etc, how do I know it's not really a Joan as opposed to Jane?  The problem is that her birth is so early and likely in Kildare rather than Carlow.  Plus how would her baptism record help, especially if in a different county?  I think I would have better luck with Pat Dunne, but I can't find him either.  Alternatively, I'd love to be able to find a marriage record for Elizabeth Cummins or for Darby Cummins.

  • Hi Terri,

Sorry if I wasn't clear.  You asked how would you know if the person was not really a Joan as opposed to a Jane.  The names were often interchangeable, so in various records you might find the same person called by different names...Jane at marriage, Johanna at baptism, etc.  I've often seen a variety of names recorded for the same woman in her children's baptismal records.

One other name issue, which you may already know about: Darby is a nickname for Jeremiah.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you Patricia.  Unfortunately whether it's Darby or Jeremiah I can't find a marriage record to determine if he is the husband of either Kitty Cummins or Elizabeth Cummins.  Darby Cummins lived on land right next to Charles Archbold and Jane Dunne.  I have so many names that I can't find records for :(
