Hi can anyone please help me , I am researching my Ancestors on my Fathers side who were from Co Donegal,  I have managed to trace bk to my 2nd great grand parents Thomas Shannon & Jane Lochard who were married in the parish church Killaghtee 17th May 1860. Their marriage certificate shows they were both living in Caslefinn ? at time of marrriage,

Thomas's father -  James Shannon,

Jane's father -  William Lochard,

both farmers I believe.

James was possibly married to Jane Mcilhenny, although i have been unable to confirm this

I have come to a standstill if anyone can help me find out more about Thomas & Jane, also James & William

My ancestry is Shannon / Spence Family Tree where there is more information / certificates

Thank you in advance

  • Baptismal records for the Church of Ireland parish of Killaghtee start in 1868.  Civil registration of births started in 1864.

I located two civil birth records for children of Thomas Shannon and Jane Lochard. Possibly there were children in 1861-1863 but no records are available.

    See sixth record for Thomas…

See fourth record for May Jane…

From the records, the family was living in Drumconor townland in Inver civil parish. Inver is the parish to the east from Killaghtee.

The Castlefinn on the 1860 marriage record must be a local place name since it does not show up on the official townland listing.

I looked at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Donegal. Did not find a Lochard record but did locate a James Shannon in Inver Glebe townland in Inver cicil parish possibly the father of Thomas.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate any marriages records for the parents of Thomas and Mary Jane.

I assume Thomas and Mary Jane emigrated?

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to look this up for me. My great grandfather was William Shannon- father Thomas - Mother Jane lochard but I cant find his birth certificate. It shows on his death cert his father Thomas was a shoemaker, I'm not sure i have the correct family. I do however have 1901 census which shows William, his mother Jane, wife Maggie, & children
On Thomas & Jane's marriage certificate it shows Thomas was a widower when he married Jane but I cant find his first wife's name . Can u help with this please. I dont have any details for Thomas but according to Jane's death cert in 1902 she was a labourers widow
My great grandfather William came to Glasgow with his wife & family after his mother Jane died. They were living in rossilly at the time.

  • see third record for an 1848 marriage between Thomas Shannon and Jane Gorrel. The father of Thomas was shown as James so likely this record is the one you were looking for.…

Civil registration of births started in 1864. It appears that William was born in that 1861-1863 window that I mentioned in my first response since he was shown as 37 in the 1901 census. Since he was born pre-1864, there would be no civil record and unfortunately no church records are available.

In my searching I did find a daughter Margaret born in 1869. See second record…

  • Good morning Roger,

Thank you once again for your time & help, it is much appreciated. I am learning as I go along . I started this journey to find out about my fathers side of the family in Co Donegal, it is proving to be quite difficult as there dosent seem to be anyone else researching them.
