John and Ellen Crow(e) (nee Mahoney) are my 3rd great-grandparents, b. April 1846 and November 1849 respectively.  They married in 1867 and had their first child, Maurice (my uncle), 1868.  That same year, John emigrated to the US and Ellen and Maurice followed the following year.

I received help from a couple of members here (in the General section) who found Maurice's birth record.  It shows place of birth as Knockmahon, but that is crossed out with Kilduane written underneath, which is also noted as the place of residence for John and Ellen.  The birth was registered in the District of Bonmahon, in the Union of Kilmacthomas.

Maurice's baptism (Roman Catholic) occurred in the Knockmahon Parish (if I understood the other member's posting correctly) with Patrick Mahoney and Brigid Crowe as informants, one member from both families.  I think Brigid (known as Bridget in the US) was born in December 1843, and think she may have been John's older sister or cousin.  She married John Mahoney/Mahaney, b 1839, in 1867.  I think John Mahoney may have been Ellen's older brother, cousin, or maybe even an uncle.  John and Bridget Mahoney (nee Crowe) are found in the 1880 US census with Morris (Maurice) as a boarder.

If anyone is able to help me pinpoint more information, such as the church in which Maurice was baptised, John and Ellen's parents' names, and if I'm lucky enough, maybe some of their descendants still living in the area, or anywhere in the country, for that matter, it would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello again!

Here is a link which describes St. Mary's church in Knockmahon   http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WA&…

I looked at the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a possible baptismal record for Ellen Mahoney in the Kill RC parish. I know the date of baptism is different than your November 1849.

  • Roger!!!  Good to hear from you again! :)

Thank you for the link to the church!  Going out on a limb here...guessing there is only 1 of each faith's church in an area in those times, making this the only Catholic church where Ellen could have been baptised?

I checked the resource notes from my aunt's findings regarding Ellen's birthdate.  In the 1900 US census, it specifically noted that she was born in November 1849.  If she was actually born in 1848, this baptismal record would still be too early, so it seems this is not my Ellen Mahoney. :(

Thank you for checking...very appreciated. :)

Like today, many of the parishes had subordinate chapels and I'm guessing that was the situation for Knockmahon. It was a chapel of Kill and any events that occurred (baptisms, marriages) were recorded in the register of the primary church.
