I believe an ancestor of mine, John Darling,  lived in Redcross at the end of the 18th  and beginning of the 19th century. He may have had a sister called Anne. If anybody has any information on this man I would be very pleased to hear from you.

  • Do you have any additional details that might help your search, name of John’s wife, any details on his children, religious denomination of your Darling family etc?

In the early 1800s the village of Redcross would likely have been in the Catholic parish of Newbridge/Avoca, or possibly Kilbride and Barndarrig. The Newbridge/Avca baptism registers go back to the 1790s, unfortunately the Kilbride and Barndarrig registers only go back to the 1850s.

The Church of Ireland parish was Redcross, and had a church in the town built 1829, according to the latest RCB Parish list, records for the parish go back to the 1830s, for earlier records they note ‘see Castlemacadam’, which as records back to the 1720s… original registers for both of these are held by the RCB Library, with some transcripts available on RootsIreland (pay-website).
