I am looking for any information on John McCarthy born in either Cork or Limerick around 1870. He was a coachman that moved to work in North Tipperary at Rodeen Upper where he married Sarah Rourke in Terryglass in 1901. He later moved to Ballickmoyler in Co Laois where he died in 1941. His marriage record recorded his address as Dromcolliher so he had connections with this area, but I don't know where he was born as both the 1901 and 1911conflict with Cork or Limerick as his place of birth. His Father is recorded as Owen on the Parish record and Noel on the Civil Record so it could be either. I do know that his Father lived in Glenduff, Broadford. If anyone has any info relating to this family, I know there were McCarthy families living in Dromcolliher in 1901 and 1911, it would be nice to find out if they were related.

  • Hi Sarah,

on the 1901 civil marriage record that I looked at John gave his age as 42 which would give a birth year of 1859 but the year of birth you gave was 1870 - what is the source of your calculation i.e. birth, census or death records? It  would behelpful if you could attach a copy of the source.

The record referred to above gives his address as Rodeen whereas you said it was Dromcolliher - can you let me see where Dromcolliher is mentioned?

The father is recorded as Owen on the marriage record - can we see where he is stated to be Noel?

Sorry about all the questions - I'm just trying to check your sources as there seems to be a lot of discrepancies i.e. age, fathers name, census differences, different locations for birth, work and death. As you know John McCarthy would be a very common name in Ireland.

    Hi Jim

Thank you for your quick reply. The 1901 census has John's age as 30 and his place of birth as Co Cork. He was indeed working at Rodeen with his future wife Sarah( aka as Sally) Rourke. The 1911 Census has his age as 50 with his place of birth as Limerick.  His death certificate in 1941 has his age as 71 - 75. I have checked Roots Ireland Parish/Civil records for Terryglass where one has his address as Dromcolliher and his Father's as Gurteen,  with the Father's name as Owen. The other record states his Father's name as Noel with the address as Rodeen. I think this is the right way round, it's all a bit confusing! I have spoken with a Cousin who remembers that John had a Brother called Dan if this is of any use? I don't have records saved from Roots Ireland but have attached the others I do. If you need anything else please let me know.

    Kind regards

    Sarah
