I'm looking for any information on John and Elizabeth (Wherry) Roche. I have found birth records in Catholic Parish Registers for some of their children in the Parish or Diocese of Ferns.  I have found Sabina Agnes, Johanna, and Fanny Teresa in these records.  Other children that I've found are John J, Mary Ann, Julia. (Whom I've verified through DNA tests) and Patrick.  I am a descendant of John J. He was my great grandfather. Do you know of this family? Are the possibly any descendants still living in this area?

Some day soon I hope to visit Ireland and would love to explore this area.

Thank you for your time,

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Luke

  • Hi Mary Ann,
The year(s) would help, a few sites to search.
Wherry in the early Tithe records, there is one listed in Wexford and another in Kings which is now County Offaly.

     In Griffiths Valuation
None in Wexford, lists only Dublin, Fermanagh, Donegal, Down and Antrim.

  • Dear Margot,

Thank you so much for your help in trying to find information about the Wherry family. Sorry about not giving any dates. That's kind of an important thing to leave out.  So this is what I know. Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane Wherry died when she was 75 on April 16 1916, (Haughton Peace) so that would mean she was born in 1841, but her first child was born in 1851 meaning she would have been only 13. So I am thinking that her age at death was reported incorrectly. She was probably born sometime in the 1830's. On some of her children's birth records it shows they lived on Cockpit Lane. Also I found references to Ferns and St Mary's parish. Its interesting the Wherry you did find was from Ferns

Thank you again for your help,

    Mary Ann

  • Hi Mary Ann,  Ferns, it's the Diocese. It pops up on most records. It's also a Parish.
This is Eliza J death, her daughter Julia Wall registered the death.

    Says...........1916 she was 75, 1911 she was 73 and in 1901she was 56.
I wonder how old she really was?
Have you all the census info etc.

  • Thank you, Margot, I do have the census info. I was just recently made aware of it.  I did find this information below but of course have no way to verify its the Elizabeth Jane I am looking for, but the dates are about right. though she would have been only 14 or 15 when she had her first child. I haven't been able to figure out how find a copy of film on line, sometimes is helpful to look at the original record. Maybe we can't find any baptism records for her in Wexford is because she was born somewhere else. Does England seem to far away?

  • Margot Secrette,

I just wanted to let you know that something did turn up to tell me about Elizabeth J Wherry's father. I found out though a newly found relative, Steve, that Elizabeth father was Alexander A Wherry and he was from Ballymore Co Westmeath. He was a constable and may have some newspaper articles about him. There was an article that mentioned him in the Waterford Cronicle on Saturday June 10 1905 about the marriage of his granddaughter Julia Wall. Perhaps this information can help find us find more about this family.

    Sincerely,

    Mary Ann
