My 2 x great grandmother was Bridget Kearney born c. 1844  from either Clare or Limerick.  She, together with a John and Edmund Kearney, came to South Africa in 1861 with the Aided Immigration to the Cape.  The record shows she came to Patrick Kearney c. 1836 who arrived a year earlier with a James Kearney c. 1834.  I have found the Death Notice here in South Africa for James Kearney which states he was from Broadford, County Clare and his parents are listed as Michael Kearney and Mary Naughton.  I'm not sure if they are all siblings or perhaps cousins but looking at their estimated birth dates I somehow think they could be siblings.  Then in 1864 there's a John Kearney c. 1837 coming to a Mary Kearney. It states he was from Nicholas Street, Limerick.  I've been searching for years now to try and find a baptism for Bridget Kearney, but have had no luck.  Please if someone is researching a Kearney family I'd appreciate it they could contact me.

Thanks

  • Dear Patty:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

I know of a local historian in Broadford and I will ask him about the two surnames of Kearney and Naughton that you have mentioned.  Both names are in East County Clare.  I also note your comment about John Kearney having stated an address of Nicholas Street in Limerick.  There is a Michael Kearney living at Nicholas Street in the parish of St. Mary's Limerick in the Griffith's VAluation for Limerick (1852) which I have copied for you.  This may be a clue, and if so, you might consider it for further research.

You can check the Broadford registers online through the NLI website and the link for them is below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0767

They are in the process of being transcribed to be put on the Clare Library website, but are not finished as yet.

I will ask the local historian and the person working on the transcriptions and I will let you know what I'm able to find out.  You may hear from either of them on this site, or you may hear back from me.

You might also consider creating an Ancestor profile for the XO Chronicles feature on this site.  You can share whatever information you have about any of your ancestors with this profile.  These profiles are widely read by all our members, they are also updated and it is possible that there are others who are searching for the same families.

If you have any questions, please reply to this thread.

The very best of luck and many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.  Please be sure to check out the Broadford parish site which is under it's Civil parish name of Kilseily.  You may find some helpful information there.

    Kind regards,

Apologies, Patty.  I sent the reply without the Griffith's Page.  Michael Kearney is located at Entry No. 26 at the top of the page.  The Civil parish is St. Mary's and the location is Nicholas Street.  For ease of reference, the website link is below:
