Hello,

My mother is Margaret King and her father was George King. His family came from Galaway/Conemara.

Names of George King's  family are Stephen, Thomas and supposedly Georges mother's name was Anna or Hannah.

George King had a sister Margaret and his uncle or brother's names are Edward and Stephen.

One of the males died from supposedly getting kicked in the spleen by a horse in Ireland at an early age.

There is another story that George's father raised horses and someone tried to take the stud (horse) and

George's father shot the man trying to steal his stud and then he fled or someone else fled to the US.

George and Margaret were born in New York, maybe.

The history has not been retained by my mother or her relatives.

I know Folan or Folen is another name associated with this family. I believe Joyce and Manning are also associated with this family.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

From the records there was a Stephen who died at the age of 12.

Many thanks.

Stephanie King Copeland

  • Hi Stephanie,

King and Folan are too names which are common in Connemara. Folan on the Spiddal to Carraroe road and King more widespread as far as Clifden. What years are you researching?

Check out  www.askaboutireland.ie - Griffith Valuations - Free Site and you can get back to me.

  • Thanks for the reply McCoy.

I am interested in Geoge King's parents and to try to understand the circumstances of the move from Ireland to U.S.

I am interested in George's father who name is likely Thomas althought that information is not definative.

George was married in 1924 at around the age of 24.  His birth was 1900 (approximate). I am interested in the states 1860-1990 presumably.

Thomas King was supposedly married to Hannah Lydon.

People are long gone and my mothers memory is not the best so I am trying to piece things together based lore and spotty memory.

    Many thanks again McCoy.

  • Hi McCoy,

    Thanks for the tip.

I found that Stephen Edward King immigrated in 1887 from Ireland first to Boston and then went to Brooklyn.

On one document it shows his name was Kuig. I am not sure if this is a gaelic version of King.

He was born 1862-1864. I still have not been able to locate his mother's name. I am still working on it.

    I will keep you posted.

  • Hi Stephanie,

A check of the Census for New York 1900 show a Stepen E. King in Brooklyn. He is married to Mary and the following sons are listed: Stephen E Jr, Michael F. Thomas G. He arrived in the US 1885 and his birth year is shown as1862.

In the 1930 Census a "Steven E King" he is as born in 1865 in Ireland. Residing with him are his wife Mary E, son Steven E. Margaret C and Hannah Lyden - sister-in-law, Widowed, birth year 1880.

Do you have any connection to this family?

  • McCoy,

Per your help, I have rifled throught the census as well. The plot continues as I believe both records are accurate in spirt but filled with inaccuracies causing further confusion for me.

Stephen Edward King immigrated to Boston first, naturalized 1885. I have an immage of the document. On this image shows a date of birth of 27 December 1867,

He left Boston due to signs that said "Irish need not apply" according to stories I heard from my mother while her memory was still intact.

He then followed work opportunities in New York. He met Mary and this union produce. Thomas George, my grandfather and Stephen Edward Jr. who died an a relatively early age (young adulthood) and a Michael F?  Are you stating that Michael F is another son per records of is the name Michale F. Thomas George (I suspect 2 people names).

I am unaware of Stephen Edward's brother  Michael F. so this is a great new piece of information for me. This would also imply that Hannah Lyden was married to Michael F.

Nor am I able to determine Stephen Edward's mother name in Ireland.  The record to which you are referring notes that Margaret Mary King (George's daughter) and Hannah Lyden, sister in law were also in the residence at some point.

Georgt Thomas and Eelanor King union (Eleanor maiden name Steeley and mother's maiden name Shields) produced Margaret Mary and Charles (my uncle).

If I have the name of Stephen's father name and mother's first and last name then I can backward engineer the family from New York to County Galway.

Stephen King is rumored to come from Connemara.  My mother stated she visited Lettercamps (a place of her family home) at some point. She also visite an aunt in Dublin and Folen and Joyce ar enames that were also said to be names of the family. I understand these are very common names.

I saw a civil record there was a Stephen born in Lettercamps around the same time of Stephen's birth. Unfortunately, his naturalization records does not match up in year to the said date of birth on the census you found/referring. And all the document I found show a pattern that Stephen does not really know his exact date of birth or it is recorded incorrectly based on his accent?

I also know on one census above his name he wrote "Kuig" above the name King. I have no idea what this is as I believe the gaelic for King is Keurig phonetically. Perhaps the person was noteing the Keurig phonetically as "Kuig" on the the census form I saw that evidences this notation.

I really appreciate your help with this McCoy.

It is very nice to know that your are there and giving me vital pieces of information and guidance.

    Respectfully,

    Stephanie

    P. S, The civil records that show the birth of Stephen in Lettercamps around the month date and year of the birth note parents as John and Honoria. however the dates are not exact and the lineage and John and Honoria show that Stephen resided in Ireland in 1990 which is not the case. I am unfamiliar with Ireland therefore I suspect there the likelihood of a Stephen King born in Lettercamps around the same date and year of my great grandfather is common so I feel this is not a completely viable lead.

  • Hi Stephanie,

In the 1900 census the names are as follows for the sons: Stephen E. Junior Born 1893, Michael F. Born 1895 and Thomas G. Born 1895. All New York.

In relation to the address your mother gave you, it may be Letterfrack in West Galway. It is near Kylemore Abbey and this may jolt a memory. Names and births are not always accurate. Emigrants often gave incorrect ages in order to secure employment, in the period we are writing about.

I suggest that you begin to gather as many marriage and death records as you can get for the various families and then find a common thread.

As regards the spelling "Kuig" this appears to refer to German families.

  • Hi Stephanie,

I should have added George T to the 1920 census. He is recorded as a plumber.
