Francis Latchford and Mary Guinane originated in County Limerick, Ireland. After their marriage, they managed a farm across the River Shannon in Paradise, County Clare. Their  six children, John, Joseph, Francis, George, William, Anna were apparently born there in County Clare. Francis was born approximately 1791 in the Ratkeale area and Mary Guinane appears to have been born in the Ardcanny area. The Guinanes appear to have been Roman Catholic, while the Latchfords were Protestant (Church of Ireland). The children of this pair were raised Roman Catholic. Francis Latchford had a first cousin, John Dogherty Latchford, who married a sister of Mary...Jane Ann Guinane. They also farmed land in Ballynacally, County Clare and had at least two children in Ireland, William and Thomas; both were raised in the Anglican tradition. Both Latchford families moved to Maryland, USA by 1940. Any information about either the Guinane or Latchford family would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

A quick search in County Limerick I found the marriage of a John Latchford to a Mary Parker in Kilkeedy on August 23rd 1790 and a Francis Latchford married a Mary Dowdle in Kilcornan on February 25th 1805. They are Church of Ireland.

The Tithe Records of 1825 have a John, William and Francis Latchford in the parish of Kilchreest. Francis is recorded in Paradise.  Tithe Records can be had at www.nationalarchives.ie (Genealogy) For Kilchreest see Ballynacally, Co. Clare on map.

www.clarelibrary.ie has records of the Parish of Kilchreest and surrounding area. It may be of assistance.

  • Thank you for your assistance. Based on my research, the Latchfords appear to have emigrated to the Rathkeale area of Limerick to the estates of Thomas Southwell and may be of German Palatine or English descent. After a period of time at that location the patriarch of this particular clan (probably named John) maintained at least 3 farms in the Ballynacally region of County Clare (operated by John, William and Francis, possibly another John) Thus, the findings discovered in the Tithe Applotments. Many Thanks.

  • To whom it may concern: I have self-published a book about the genealogy of a number of families that lived in the region of Ballynacally, County Clare: Latchford, Guinane, Brady, Hehir (O'Hehir)and their interlocking relations. The book is called "From Clare, and Back Again". Here is recorded the genealogical research and the visit back to the "homeland" of a fifth generation Irish American. Intertwined within the work are reflections of the history, geography and culture of the Shannon/ Fergus estuary region. Two Latchfords married two Guinane sisters and moved to Annapolis Junction, Maryland in time to escape the famine and participate in the American Civil War. Their Irish brethren, the Brady's and the Hehir's remained in Ireland to face the famine and the Irish war for the Republic. Some of the additional genealogical surnames found during research of the region were Clancy, King, Chambers, Kennedy, Cleary, Browne and Sexton. For Further interest, contact Bob Brett
