My GtGtGrandmother Eliza Allen/an aged 25 arrived in Australia(Sydney) on the Emerald Isle 23rd December 1841.  She was single and came with her married sister Sarah Ann Rutherford(27) and brother in law Robert(29).  Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth and her character and references came from Gabrielle and Joseph Williamson of Creenagh.  She was protestant.

  • Creenagh is in the parish of Kilmore, Co Armagh.

Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists Joseph Williamson in Creenagh. He had plot 8 which was a house and 4 acres of land. Nearby were a Charles Allen on plot 18a and Robert Allen on plot 20 (land only, no house).

Griffiths only has 1 Rutherford in Kilmore parish. He was a Robert Rutherford and he lived in Money townland. He had plot 19 which was a house and 6 acres, I can’t say that’s definitely your family merely that it's the only Rutherford in Kilmore in Griffiths. Griffiths didn’t list everyone so it’s not as detailed as a census. However Money is fairly close to Creenagh, so that sounds encouraging.

The Williamson property in Creenagh is on the modern Creenagh Rd. Judging by Google Earth the land is still farmland but the house is gone. The Rutherford property was on the modern Tullygarden Rd, near the Old Quaker graveyard. Again it is still farmland but the house is demolished.

A Robert Rutherford died 8.11.1866 aged 40 in the Armagh registration area.  Don’t know if it’s the same man but you can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option. You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate:

William Rutherford farming there in 1901.

The Valuation revision records on the PRONI website show the Money property changing from Robert to Ann Rutherford in 1881 and then by 1893 it’s William.

I’d guess that Ann Rutherford was Robert’s wife and took over the farm after his death. After her death her son William took it over. Here’s her death in 1889, aged 60, and her son William was the informant:

William died in 1925. Probate abstract:

Rutherford William of Money county Armagh farmer died 9 November 1925 Probate Belfast 28 March to William Irwin and Edward Proctor farmers. Effects £44.

His niece Elizabeth (Bessie)  died in 1947:

Rutherford Elizabeth of Money Kilmore Armagh county Armagh spinster died 31 January 1947 Probate Belfast 19 June to canon Samuel Mayes retired clerk in Holy orders and George Conn solicitor's clerk. Effects £450 17s. 8d.

Both wills are in PRONI in paper format,. You can view them there free, or PRONI or a local researcher will copy them for you for a fee.

I found a marriage certificate which I think you’ll find interesting. A Robert Rutherford (father also named Robert) married Ann Allen in 1849. So a second Rutherford-Allen marriage. Seems very likely to have been connected to your family, I would have thought. Robert junior was living in Crewcat when he married.  Ann lived in Altaturk which is in the parish of Loughgall (close by).

The marriage was in Richhill Church of Ireland. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so that points to it as being the Allen family’s church, and possibly the Rutherfords too. Sadly that church lost all it’s early records in the 1922 fire in Dublin and has no baptisms earlier than 1878, marriages from 1845.

You’ll find Gabriel Williamson listed in the tithe applotment records (1833) for Creenagh in 1833, along with Robert Rutherford of Crewcat.

The tithes were a tax on land (much resented) but effectively it’s a list of who was farming in Kilmore in 1833.

Crewcat is about half a mile south of Money, near Richhill.

  • Hello Elwyn

Many many thanks for your assistance with my query.  I have copied all your information and will be doing some further research using it.

I have previously attempted investigating her family but hampered by my lack of Irish knowledge.

    Kind regards

    Elizabeth
