Hi there.

I was able to trace my great grandfather to Sixmilebridge by matching information on his marraige certificate Burlington, VT.  The link to the baptismal record is below:  https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/61039/images/02474_06_…; His name in the states is Thomas O'Halloran, and Thomas OHalloran andJane Galvin are listed as his parents.....I think it is the same as the Jane Gavin in the parish register.   They list him as illegitimate.

I found links to brothers in newspaper  events (marrage/funeral) that I didn't know existed.

How can I find out more about his parents and his early years?

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Tara:

I didn't see your post before this for some reason.  I would recommend that you try to find his parents via civil registration if possible.  You can view the records on the Irish Genealogy website at this link:  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

In addition, if you go through the online resources connected to Sixmilebridge parish, you may find further information.  I would try to track them forward.  I see that his date of baptism is July 1865 so Civil registration had begun at that stage.  There may well be a civil birth record so check that link above.  Rossmanagher is the townland that is listed as their residence.  This should be looked at in Griffith's for any O'Halloran or Gavan/Galvin ancestors.  If they remained in Ireland, they may be listed in the 1901 & 1911 Census records.  You can view them online as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  The link for the resources for Sixmilebridge is here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilfinaghty.htm

The best of luck with your research.

    Jane
