Hello,

I’m looking for information about some ancestors from the Athlone/Kiltoom area. Greatly appreciate any insights or information about the following ancestors:

Parents:

Bartholomew O’Brien (born circa 1813, died circa 1889)

Catherine Heavaghan (born circa 1822, died circa 1902)

Son and his wife:

Richard J. O’Brien (born 1864, married 1889, died 1949)

Bridget Mary O’Brien (?)

Richard’s daughter:

Kathleen O’Brien (born circa 1891, died 17 July 1972)

she married John Jones (born 1891, married 1915, died 1964)

Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located a few records which you may already have. The first link is Richard's 1864 civil birth record followed by his father's 1889 death record. I was not able to locate the death record for his mother Catherine. The third link is the 1889 marriage record followed by the 1901 and 1911 census records for Richard and his family in Corrantotan.

On the subscription site Roots Ireland I located baptismal records for eleven children of Bartholomew and Catherine as follows: Mary 1840 Bartholomew (died young?)1841 Dominick 1848 Catherine 1850 Bartholomew 1852 Brigid 1853 Anne Augusta 1855 Thomas Joseph 1857 Christopher Michael 1860 Francis 1862 Richard 1864 I was not able to find a marriage record.

  • Hi I too am trying to find my Obrien ancestors in Co Roscommon my Gt g mother was Catherine Obrien her father was Denis Obrien (a Miller). I was told they came from Fairymount and Catherine left Ireland with Andrew Dolan my Gtg father to get married. Catherine was born about 1853. I have been travelling to Roscommon on numerous ocaissions for the past 16 yrs without making any real progress apart from meeting many nice people and my search has been around the Frencpark area but now I feel that I should be looking further south so if anyone can help I would be extremely grateful. • These O'Briens are still there around the kiltoom and Atheagh part of roscommon outside Athlone. Mill still in place at Atheagh though the water has been redirected. I dont think the have move house since they were shifted out of Co Clare in the 1740's so easy to locate.

  • Hello Roscommon O'Brien descendants,
Hi my name is John Richard O'Brien and I am a co-admin of the OBrien DNA Project. My father was from Buckhill Fairymount, Co Roscommon. The progenitor of our Roscommon O'Brien's was Mr Denis O'Brien of Aghaderry/Loughglynn born 1763 - 1855.

He ran a Mill built by Viscount Dillon on his estate in 1792 and we have been successful linking many surrounding areas O'Brien's in/around Fairymount area and Tibohine Civil Parish.
One hypothesis is that our O'Brien descends from the same family of the OBrien Family of Athlone who was also in the Mill business family. Please contact me at +19142633539 to discuss or email at jobrien7490@yahoo.com.
We now have the ability through DNA tas well as our all volunteer research team to see if your O'Brien's descend from the same line. Please reach out because Mr Denis has been proven to be a very important descendant of the O'Brien's of Thomond Royal line in Co Clare. - John

  • John,

My name is Bernard Francis O’Brien and just happened upon your post regarding O’Brien dependents from County Roscommon in Ireland.
I know my Grand Father (Bernard O’Brien) left his family in Ireland’s County Roscommon with his sister Marie around 1923 and came to America.  His Father was also Bernard Francis O’Brien and his Mother’s name was Anna McHugh. I am trying to trace any roots I may still have in that area or elsewhere unfortunately I am unsure of the Parish this family may have been a part of.
If you have any knowledge of this families history I would appreciate it if you could lend some insight.

    Thank You,

    Bernard O’Brien

I have 3 pictures from early to mid 1950's. My mother and aunt would visit their father stationed at the Carnagh range. She said their name was O'Brien(but not related to her, also O'Brien) but couldn't remember first names. I believe I've found the house/cottage location, but not the 2 story home. Any names would be appreciated. The group sitting on the wall, my Mum, Loretta, is second from the right. The group of 4, my Auntie Theresa is in the plaid dress, Mum said the gentlemen on the wall was very tall. The 2 story building.Kiltoom/Carnagh Mum second from right
