Hi

I am looking for help from your wonderful and selfless volunteers in clearing a brick wall in my ancestry records. My  grandfather James Roche born about 1892 possibly in Kilmeedy with connections to Newcastle West, Dromcollogher and Caherlane  near Abbeyfeale Co Limerick. James married Mary Sheehy in Ardagh  on June 19th 1923. They had eight children Jim, William, Patrick P, Michael , May, Kathleen, Bridie and Eileen.

I  only found out out who my paternal grandfather was a after many years of research and a lucky break with my dna results. My late father never knew or met his father  in the Ireland of the 1920s.

The problem that I have is finding my paternal great grandfather is that I have nothing concrete to go on.. I have seen it written in some records that his name was Michael. I cannot make the link with him and John and Mary Moloney Caherlane Abbeyfeale with whom I can trace back many of my Roche connection. John Roche was born in 1828 and died in 1897, He married Marie (Mary) Moloney in 1863 who was born in 1839 and died in 1925. They  had 12 children Thomas, Maria born 1863 , James born 1865, Margarite 1866-1920, Kate 1868-1918, Julia born 1869, Michael J 1870-1938, Patrick Joseph 1875-1943, ( Julia 1876) Johanna 1878- 1964, Helena/Ellen 1880-1955, Bridget born  1885.

Ancestry Thru lines are suggesting that John Moloney and Mary  Moloney are my paternal great great grandparents, a conclusion I agree with. If this is the case is it must follow that a son of my great great grandfather is my great grandfather.

I was hoping that their is some record or fact can be unearthed if possible.

Best Wishes

John Mc Namara

  • John:

See third record at the link for the 1923 marriage record which shows the father of James Roche was Michael Roche. The record shows James Roche was from Kilmeedy but that does not mean that Michael was from Kilmeedy.

Going back and looking for a birth or baptismal record for James Roche, I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and I don't find a good lead around 1892. There is a civil birth record and baptismal record in 1887 in Abbeyfeale for a James Roche with parents Michael Roche and Hanora Hunt. See third record from the bottom at this link.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The James Roche born 1887 was the youngest of at least eight children born to Michael Roche and Hanora Hunt, the oldest born in 1874

Since you have the Michael Roche shown in your note as born 1870 and died 1938, there is no way the 1887 record fits with a Michael Roche born 1870. So either I located the wrong James Roche birth/baptismal record or if it is the correct record then your Michael Roche is not connected to John Roche and Mary Maloney.

By the way, you have Michael Roche dying in 1938, did he die in Ireland ( I could not find a civil record) or in another country?

Let me know and I will try to further assist you.

  • Hello John, I have noticed your recent message and Roger's reply to you; I have been investigating this and have found there is only two entries for a birth in the Newcastle area (which Ardagh) would come under at that time) Both Mary Sheehy's were born in the Newcastle Union Workhouse, 1 Born 3.5.1888 to John and Joanna Sheehy  2. May Sheehy born 5.5.1886 to Catherine & Edmond Sheehy.

As far as a marriage is concerned, It would seem that therecord of June 19 1923 is correct however, I would be happier to confirm this if I could see the record: perhaps you already have this? It should certainly show each of the couple's fathers. There is 953 James Roche records in Limerick, this covers Killeedy however, there is not one listed in three different search sites for the year or five years around 1892 that fit your question. Are you sure that this is the James Roche connected to your family?

Do you have any address that will give some light on the family apart from the older years Maloney, Abbeyfeale?

I agree with Roger on the Michael and Hanora Hunt, so I think that you can discount this record

Please look at addresses, did any of the family emigrate and to where and when, that might help too. I have checked Find My Past, Ancestry, Geneology, Roots

Let me or Roger know of anything further
