Steven:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Many RC parishes in Co. Galway do not have records back to the 1830s so finding a baptismal record for John is problematic. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and only located one record near 1836. See below. I did not find a brother Thomas with aprents John Malia and Bridget Walker.

Hi Steven & Roger,
I had a look on the cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo but there were no Malias I'm afraid.
However, rootsireland.ie/ has 95 burial records of Malia (mostly surname variants) from Galway 1866 to 1935; there are 6 John Melias but only two have the age recorded! There is one Malia but it has little info - no graveyard of course!!
