Please help me find a birth record for my great-grandmother, Margaret Brady and a marriage record for her parents, Patrick Brady and Rose Sexton.

Margaret was born between 1864 and 1869, female, Roman Catholic, unknown occupation.

Born in Tullyvin, County Cavan

Married in the U.S. on May 20, 1886.

Parents names were Patrick Brady and Rose Sexton.

Margaret had no children born in Ireland.

Siblings were Rose Brady born 6/21/1870, Patrick born 9/30/1872, Ann born 5/1/1868, and Phillip born 3/18/1864.

Other possible relatives were William and George Brady.

Thank you.

I was able to find civil birth records for four children of Patrick Brady and Rose Sexton. They lived in Carricknashoke townland in Larah civil parish. The RC parish of Larah has late starting records around 1876. The parents were married before civil registration started in 1864 and I don't believe there is a church record available. Also, I did not find a civil birth record for Philip. My guess is he was born before 1864 when civil registration started and there would be no church record.

Rose, the mother,  died April 3 1901. Her daughter Mary Fitzpatrick was the informant. Mary was probably born pre-1864. Rose was a widow.

    See first record.    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1901/05726/4615851.pdf

Here is Mary in the 1901 census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Larah_South/Carricknashoke/1048408/   She was a widow with a number of children.

This appears to be the death record for Patrick in 1877. Informant was Bernard Brady. No indication that he was a son or brother.

  • Wow, Roger, you found them all. I'm happy to know there really was a Rose Sexton as I had trouble finding proof that her maiden name was correct. Ancestry and FamilySearch records were not too helpful. And I agree that you found Margaret's birth record even though her mother's maiden name was different. At least her siblings' records had the right info.

Thank you for finding her parents' records as well. I failed to mention that Margaret had a brother Bernard who stayed behind in Ireland. My mother had reported bothers Bernard, Patrick, and Philip. My bad. Sorry.

Since you overachieved, could you also help find more info on Margaret's husband, James Duffy? I had written a separate post on him but didn't get a helpful answer from the other two County Cavan volunteers. Ancestry.com has his birth year of 1865. His U.S. naturalization petition reports a birth date of May 4, 1865. Perhaps no other details exist, but I thought ask anyway.

Patricia and McCoy are two of our best volunteers and if there was a birth/baptismal record available for James Duffy with the parental info provided, they would find it.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Ireland and there were no James Duffy baptismal/birth records with a mother with the surname McCann.

I looked at all 1864 and 1865 civil birth records (about four)  in Co. Cavan for a James Duffy and there were no good leads. Civil registration started in 1864 and not all families complied with the registration requirements in the first years.

Many immigrants changed their year of birth and sometimes there month and day of birth when they came to their country.

Some RC parishes in Cavan have records that start later than 1865.

Do you have names for any siblings for James Duffy? I saw an 1862 baptismal record for a James Duffy in Mullagh RC parish. The mother was Mary Brady. If you have sibling names maybe we can look at that record as a good lead.

  • Roger,

I appreciate all of the help that you and your fellow volunteers have given me. The informative emails of a general nature from the Ireland XO website have been helpful as well.

Patricia and McCoy may be among your best volunteers, but I felt like they left me hanging (didn't respond) after I gave them revised maiden name. Also, I gave them the details on the U.S. marriage of James Duffy and Margaret Brady, but they responded with details for a marriage that took place in Ireland.

At any rate, it's all good.
