I checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses and the only Waldron, O'Dougherty or Grady families in Fuerty parish is this Grady family.

The two sons John and Michael were bachelors and their death records are below. The informant on both records was a nephew James Kenny..

    fifth record  Michael  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

    eighth record John   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

IIt would be great if you can add Martin Waldron to our XO Chronicles site. Here is the link directly to Fuerty parish (hopefully the link works)

No Waldrons in Fuerty parish right now, so far as I'm aware, but we're here in Athleague parish of which Fuerty is part. Some years ago, a Mrs.Marie Elizabeth Sullivan (nee Waldron), a visiting American, gave us information on Fuerty Waldrons. Her information states that a Michael Waldron married a Mary Grady, the first family to which she could trace her lineage. Michael was born c.1797 in Co.Roscommon; Mary Grady was born on April 30, 1802, a daughter of.....Grady and Alice Nolan. The 8 known children of Michael and Mary were Anna (married Michael Rooney); Elizabeth ( m. Michael McCroden); Martin ( m.twice: Mary McCroden/ Johanna Stack); Bridget (m. Peter Kaveny); John (m. Bridget McLaughlin); Cecilia (m. George Porterfield); Peter (m. Mary Gavin) and James (m. Mary Burns).
Martin had 5 children with Mary McCroden: William, James H., Martin ( died at one day old), Anne and Mariah He also had 5 children with Johanna Stack: Martin, John T., Daniel, Phillip and Maggie. Martin and Johanna settled in North Dakota and are buried in White Lake, South Dakota. Hope this opens up some avenues for you. Jim Waldron

  • Thank you, Jim! My great grandfather was James H. Waldron, the son of Martin and Mary McCroden. James H. married Mary Ann O'Dougherty and their son, James Francis Waldron is my grandfather. James Francis married Alta Shank and they had John, Kenneth, Ella, Laverne, Dorothy, and Donald Sylvester. Donald Waldron is my father. He was born in White Lake, South Dakota but moved to Sacramento and married my mother there. My name is also Marie Elizabeth Waldron but I have no knowledge of the woman who gave you all this information. Great meeting you Jim, and thanks for the information. Maybe I'll see you one day in Athleague.

  • Marie, Just a few extra items of information on the name Waldron in Fuerty. At the moment, they are from my badly organised notes but every detail adds to the genealogical jigsaw.

A Thomas Waldron is listed in the Tithe Applotment Books for 1825. He held land (53 acres) in the townlands of Tobbervaddy, Ballinacarrow and Lisnatea, all in the parish of Fuerty but adjoining Athleague.

In Griffith's Valuation of 1857, a Sarah Waldron held 46 acres in fee (full ownership) in the town land of Carrowkeel, parish of Fuerty in 1857. She was also leasing quite an amount of land in the same town land.

The American couple who passed on the earlier information were Marie Elizabeth (Waldron)and Roger Sullivan from New Lenox, Illinois. They visited Athleague in September 2013. Part of the typed A4 sheet she left states that " Martin and Johanna (Stack), Martin's second wife, settled in North Dakota and are buried in White Lake, South Dakota, close to the family of his son, James H".

Athleague is a small village. When you come, we're easy to find. Jim W

  • Hi Jim!

We are always looking for local volunteers who can assist us with visitors coming to Ireland particularly next year. Would you be willing to be a volunteer for the local Athleague/Fuerty area? Volunteers can also help us with adding content to our local parish pages on our IRO web site. Let me know. Thanks!

  • Jim:

Thanks! I'll pass on your name to our HQ in Ireland ( I live in the USA).  We have a group in Castlebar that will be coordinating visits to areas in Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal. We expect a lot of travel to Ireland next year. Maybe one or two will come to the Athleague/Fuerty area

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out and your willingness to help visitors with local genealogical information.

I help coordinate volunteers in this area.

There is no time commitment expected from volunteers but your local knowledge is invaluable to people trying to find their ancestors so we are very grateful to you for your involvement.

You can contact me directly at mbaynes@irelandxo.com so I can get your contact details or if you could fill up this short registration so I can get in touch with you if we need assistance in your area.
