    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Ballybacarrow is in Kilvarnet civil parish. The RC parish is Ballysadare/Kilvarnet but the baptismal records for that parish start in 1842. I did check the subscription site Roots Ireland but the earliest Mary Kearns baptismal record on their data base for Co. Sligo was in the 1840s.

I did check the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilvarnet civil parish and there was a Hugh Kearns in Ballynacarrow South possibly a relation to Mary Alice.

I also checked the 1901 census for Ballynacarrow and there were no Kearns living in the townland.

You may want to add Mary Alice's emigration story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection.  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • How would I find any more information on Hugh Kearns that is listed in the 1858 Griffiths Valuation?

I searched Roots Ireland and did not find any marriage records for a Hugh Kearns in Co. Sligo. I also did not locate any baptismal records for a Kearns child with father Hugh. Also did not find a Hugh Kearns baptismal record back before 1858. Many of the parishes in Sligo have late starting parish records.

I located an 1890 death record for a Hugh Kearns where his son Andrew was the informant. However, the townland was not Ballynacarrow South but a different townland in a bordering parish (Achonty). Did Hugh go to live with his son? Is this another Hugh Kearns?

  • Thanks for all your help, most likely never know Mary's history, at least she had a good one here in Victoria, Australia. A sad start but good ending. Cheers Sue
