Mary Toner (1845 - aft.1890) married James McFeters (or McFeeters))(1835 - 1919) they had seven children that were all born in or around Omagh, Tyrone, Ireland - Margaret (1865), Joseph (1868), James (1870), Francis (1872), Mary (1875), Andrew (1877) and Elizabeth (1882) - Margaret and Mary migrated to Philadelphia around 1886 - 1887, While Jamers, Mary, Andrew and Elizabeth followed in 1890. I am not sure about Joseph and James, but do know that Francis folled at some point.

Margaret was my Great-Grandmother. She married Edward McDonough in Philadelphia in 1887, and they had four children, one of which was my Grandfather John Joseph McDonough. She passed in 1896, and edward then married her sister Mary, with whom he had four more children.

I have a good deal of information after they arrived in the USA, but can find nothing on James and Mary in Ireland, other than records of most of the childrens births. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Walt McDonough

  • Walt,

There’s a death for a James McFeters on 31.3.1871 which may be the young James in your family. The death certificate is not available free on the irishgenealogy site ye but if you want to check it out you can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

James & Mary seem to have moved around a bit. Not unusual for a labouring family. I see Joseph was born in Mullaghslin on 11.5.1868. Andrew in Skeboy in 104.1877 and Elizabeth back in Mullaghslin on 21.7.1880.

I had a look at the Valuation revision records (on the PRONI website) to see if I could find the McFeters family. There was no James listed but there was a Joseph McFeters on plot 28 which was a house, outbuildings and just under 5 acres. I suspect that's where your family were staying, presumably with a close relative. The records show Joseph left in 1883 (replaced by a Hagan family).

I noticed this death for Alexander McFeters in Mullaghslin in 1898, aged 63. He’s likely to be related to the family somehow:

I can’t see James senior in the 1901 or 1911 censuses. Nor can I see a death for him in 1919.
