I’m am looking for any records or information on John McCloskey born about 1785 from Dungiven Ireland or his wife Jane Mullen (1785).  They were married in Ireland and their children were born there. The family immigrated to America in the 1830s and settled in Pittsburgh.  We think John had brothers, Michael and James. James had a daughter, Jane born in Dungiven in 1835. They were related to Patrick McCloskey, the father of Cardinal John McCloskey, the first Irish American Cardinal.  Patrick May have been John’s brother or first cousin.

  • Dungiven RC parish has the following records:

    Baptisms, 1825-34 and 1847-81; marriages, 1825-34

    and 1864-82; deaths, 1825-32 and 1870-71.

The parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

You may find mention of your family there. If not, DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee. The North of Ireland Family History Society are running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
