Thank you for your helpful reply .
I wonder if it is possible for more information on Charles Mooney and Rose MacMany/ Mac Kenny from Williamstown Booterstown. Although their children were born between 1842 and 1862 in Williamstown were they themselves from Williamstown?

  • Hi Frances,

It was customary for marriages to take place in the bride's parish so it looks like Rose was from there.

It is disappointing that the parents' names are not in the record which is from www.rootsireland.ie/

There are no Mooneys or McAnnys in Wicklow in the 1841 Irish Census

No luck with birth or baptism for Charles or Rosa

  • Many thanks . I am trying to discover Rose's surname . On the marriage document kindly sent it says her father is Patrick McAnny. On her 8 children's records I haven't found McAnny but I have found MacMany,MacKenny, MacEuniery, McInnery and McKearney. Each very phonetic but which is the most likely for 1841? Which parish is Enniskerry Co.Wicklow in?

  • Enniskerry is an RC parish and the civil parish would be Powerscourt.

We can't determine the actual surname in 1841. Too many possibilities. Another one would be McElhenny.

  • Enniskerry didn't officially become a seperate RC parish until 1859, before that time the area was part of the parish of Bray. In the 1830s  and 40s Bray parish had 4 chapels one of which was in Curtlestown townland just west of Enniskerry, mass was also said on Sundays in a Barn near to Enniskerry. Usually any events should have been recorded with the parish, in this case Bray, but in this case it appears that Enniskerry chapel kept some of it's own records, but might be worth extending any search to Bray records.

Griffith's valuation (1852 for this area) notes about 15 McNaney/McNeney properties in Powerscourt civil parish, so another spelling variaton to add to your list. Most seem to be farmers, some with quite reasonably sized holdings of 20 or 30 acres.

  • Many thanks . Have been to Enniskerry today . Unfortunately no priest or secretary in residence at the church to help. Told to ring a Margaret Blackburn on Monday .
Very interesting re Rose's surname and that that variation was in Powerscourt at that time.
